Has anyone else heard about the new laws in South Australia which state that any comment you make anywhere on the internet (chat rooms, forums, blogs, comments on news sites, twitter, etc etc) must be accompanied by the authors name and post code and failure to do so would result in prosecution. This would essentially mean that any criticism of the government on the ebay forum must include your full name and post code.

This is 1930’s nazi germany style stuff, how does the government expect to enforce this.

Here is a link to an article on the new laws

And for the record BOTH parties rubber stamped this through the senate.

My god!! When will the punters wake up an tell the pollies to represent those who voted for them rather than their own propaganda and jobs!

Amazing.

ASIO must be getting lazy lol

The only good thing to come out of this is we wont have to read the same old dribble that the party hacks keep posting, they wont want us to know who they are.

This is so funny... I guess it is one way to cut down monitoring required by the intelligence agencies.

Short Adelaide, long.... err... Byron Bay!

Full name: Osama Bin Here
Post code: Afghanistan doesn't have them

Dear Leader,

How are they going to police this great new rule and track down the traitors/offenders?

Kim J. Ill, Pyongyang, 8888

PS: South Australia is the greatest, most powerful state.

Interesting how they will prosecute people who don't put up their name and post code.

Sure they can track IP, but that has problems all of its own.

Happily sitting behind a few proxies

very very strange

although i've always been told SA is the world's testing ground - with that in mind, it seems very interesting!

I live in SA and Rann has been getting more out of control and the months go by, civil rights and freedom of speech is being eroded and somebody needs to stand up and say something before its too late.

All hail Rann, our fearless leader. Thank you.

Name: Bikie NoFreedom James
Postcode: 0888

Yeh SA is pandering to its conservative voter base. Rann loves selling fear.

As others have said how the hell do they plan on monitoring it? Even a lot of internet providers have inbuilt proxies so when you look up your IP its not the one at your house.

Long IT companies with proxy websites :)

What would happen say if I lived and was posting fromthe USA, it would be hard for them to do any thing about that.

Exactly.

Leaving aside the fact that its impossible to onitor, even if you lived in a different state you wouldnt have to do it unless it was Federal law.

In fact how do they aim to make websites comply if they are hosted in a different state or country?

Sounds like they are just trying to vote grab (?) but its a weird way to go about it

I might be naive, but requirement doesn’t say we cannot be critical.

It only says about being responsible poster and being able to stand by the comment.

We all know what faceless people in the crowd do.
There is plenty of rubbish around, but no one is responsible for it.

Of course Big Brother can have an easy data, but should that stop somebody’s dole payment or single mother support pension or housing commission accommodation? Probably not.

This is nonsense, what happens if the server just happens to be in Queensland. I think anyone with a forum in SA should move the server.

Full Name: You will be exterminated.
Postcode: Cyberspace

Almost forgot that large groups of German immigrants live in SA.

Possible, they brought some habits from the former fatherland.

Are you nuts? :)

They'd be on the phone to the FBI/CIA/XYZ and they'd break down your door under some Patriot Act anti-terror legislation or other.

Does this law only apply to comments relating to the forthcoming election?

If so, consider this a general comment. Any government, anywhere in the world that enacts such legislation cannot consider itself democratic. Freedom of information, freedom of opinion and freedom of discussion without fear of persecution are the very foundations of democracy. It's not hard to believe that self serving parliamentarians would enact such a legislation, but why on earth would anyone with more than two fifths of a brain sign it into law?
People unite against an identity card, but they let this sail through?
