I bought a laptop a few months back but there is no built in serial port.

Common problem these days!

I am trying to configure a cisco router from the console port (rj45) to the laptop.
A serial to USB does not pick up the router (from hyper terminal).

Is the driver for the USB-to-serial interface installed ok? you should see it as another serial port (com2 or com4 are typical) if not that's your problem. Are you using a rollover cable?

Wondering if I need to get a docking station with serial ports or is there an alternative?

I got mine working just fine, just remember 9600/N/8/1 and get flow control set appropriately.

..and the reason the I was not seeing additional com ports was because I installed the driver onto my main PC not the laptop !
