Recently had my home network wiped out by a phoneline surge

Old system was:

4 XP computers
ISP = Optusnet broadband DSL
Optus -Dlink dsl-302g modem
WTE16608 --4 port Broadband Router
All linked with Ethernet Cables.
NAT enabled.

New System
Same XP computers
Same ISP

D-Link -- DSL-504T -- combined Router/Modem
Cable Linked -- NAT enabled

The local network works fine
3 computers link to the Internet OK

The 4th and main computer will not link to the internet -- IE reports a possible ports error --- have opened (I think) ports 80 etc --- disabled Firewalls --- still no success.

Will connect to Email.

At the moment am working around it by disconnecting this computer from the local network and using the new modem Optus supplied via USB -- if connected to the local network the USB internet connection for this computer will not work.

This is the Computer that was used to setup the D-Link Router/Modem --- the other three just fell into place.

Any help would be appreciated as it's a real pain in the ar*e

Thanks
Coyotte

Is it possible that the problem PC took the surge and wiped out the ports? Either that, when IE fails to boot up it can also mean a virus. Could you do a system restore to before the surge?

Coyotte,

Could you please post up the exact error message that IE is giving you.

IF email works then the problem is, as you say, "ports" related or application related.

Ordinarily when you have one of these Dlink boxes it can be managed from a web browser. If this is the case with yours you might like to test browsing to that device from the 4th PC. This should eliminate the issue of ports/firewalling, at least on the Dlink device.

Can connect to Modem o/k --- 10.1.1.1

EXPLORER'S NETWORK DIAGNOSTICS :

"windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPS or FTP this is probably caused by a firewall setting on this computer.

Check the firewall settings for HTTP port (80) HTTPS port (445) and FTP port (21)".

HI Coyote,

If you havent got this sorted already. Check from IE Tools\internet options\Connections\lan settings and just make sure nothing is in these tabs.

Anything here could cause your problem is its overiding any automatic configuration.

Hope it helps

No not sorted out.

AVG reports no viruses.

System Restore prior to incident.

new network card -- no help.

Removed all network drivers and optus software.

Can not follow why it works with the Optus modem, but only if the network cable is unplugged.

Probably end up formating and reinstalling XP --- will give me something to winge about besides the markets.

Thanks for the help people.

Cheers

The fact that the machine can connect to Email makes it sound like an IE issue. Can you try installing FireFox to see if it gives the same errors?

Halfway thru your diagnostic file, it says it reached microsoft.com ok on port 80 - But only once, the rest fails.

Same problem with Firefox and Deepnet.

Although reached St George Bank once only with IE7 --- wasn't in cache as the current date was displayed !! --- weird

Can't reach Email now

Thanks

Where are the ports located and what are they???

Network card, Modem or elsewhere?

Cheers

The ports are not physical, but logical. Port numbers identify services that servers host eg. mail on TCP port 25, web browsing on TCP port 80, secure web browsing on TCP port 443 etc. Combine an IP address and a port number eg. "207.46.199.30:80" and you have all the ingredients required to make a connection to that server and begin to access it's information.

It seems that IE is trying to suggest that these ports are being blocked by the computer itself ie. personal firewall software running on the affected machine is blocking outbound connection attempts to (presumably) anywhere on TCP ports 80, 443, 21 etc.

I think this could just be leading us down the garden path...

IF the test to try browsing to 10.1.1.1 worked, then this confirms that your new NIC is working okay AND outbound connections on port 80 are also functioning.

What happens if you do the following:

Start -> Run -> cmd -> telnet 207.46.199.30 80 (hit enter)

The expected behaviour is a blank screen with a flashing cursor. Wait long enough and you should get dropped back to the "C:\>" prompt. If this works, next try:

Start -> Run -> cmd -> telnet www.microsoft.com 80 (hit enter)

You can also try the following:

Start -> Run -> cmd -> tracert 207.46.199.30

AND

Start -> Run -> cmd -> tracert www.microsoft.com

Both of the tracert tests should get at least 12-15 hops before they start timing out.

Could you try these and post a transcript of the results up here?

Thanks,

The ASX Gorilla.

Test No 1 --- DOS mode -- cursor only -- did not return to C:/> (30 min)

Test No 2 --- DOS mode -- DOS screen dropped out after a couple of minutes.

Test No 3 --- DOS mode -- timed out on the 12th attempt (several times )

Test No 4 --- DOS mode -- did not attempt to connect as in Test No3 -- came back to cursor and then DOS screen dropped out.

Below are Screen Shots of tests 1-3 -- test 4 ended the same as T1 before dropping out.

Thanks

Thats interesting Coyotte.

I think that your DNS is failing. When you telnet using just the IP address of Microsoft.com it works, when you use the name, it fails. When you traceroute using the IP address it works...when you use the name, it fails.

The fact that your 2nd test tracerouted all the way out onto the Internet confirms that your NIC card works, your DLink router/modem works and so I bet that if you tried to browse to 207.46.199.30 using IE it would work.

Try putting, "http://207.46.199.30" into IE and see if you get to Microsoft.com.

Yep...we're getting closer.

The reason why half the page loads is that within the page some graphics are referenced via their own URL, which contains a DNS name which needs to resolved (but can't).

I'm 90% certain it's a DNS issue.

Who is your ISP, Optus?

If it's Optus, try over riding the automatically assigned DNS server settings by putting in "211.29.133.110".

Gorilla.

Yep that worked:

Am actually using the network setup now as I post this !!!

Thanks Heaps, Gorilla

and a big thank you to those who made suggestions

THANK YOU

Hi all

I bought a laptop a few months back but there is no built in serial port.

I am trying to configure a cisco router from the console port (rj45) to the laptop.
A serial to USB does not pick up the router (from hyper terminal).

Wondering if I need to get a docking station with serial ports or is there an alternative?
Cheers

If there is an alternative I don't know of it. I use a USB to serial adaptor thingy (technical name). Had 25 and 9 pin outputs.

Thanks gorilla,

I know I can get a PCMCIA card to serial, but not sure if it will be picked up as the com port from hyper terminal.
Starting to fear the worst!

cheers
