My first boat

Most (if not all) cruising yachts/trailer sailers will have some sort of power.

But what are you looking to get out of this new boat? Fishing? Cruising? Island hopping? Live aboard and travel the world? Sail the coast? Skiing? Wakeboarding?

I would strongly suggest that before you jump in and buy, take a week off and go up to the Whitsundays, hire a bareboat charter yatch (with or without skipper) and see if sailing is your speed.
If it isn't, remember that the bigger the power boat, the bigger the fuel tank.:2twocents

Good question. Do not most sailing craft have an engine?

Yes, required for maneuvaribility in marinas and such. Usually a small diesel motor under a staircase somewhere with a fold out propellor. I would DEFINITELY go on a few SAIL charters first and see if you like it. Go to a local yacht club and ask to "crew" for anyone. They are always looking for "newbies" to torture. It also depends on what SIZE yacht you are talking about knocker? Anything smaller than 41 feet in sail is really a racing yacht and not much of a cruiser (sleeping, toilets, showers)

I have tried sailing and I can assure you it was not a refreshing nor romantic experience at all.

Whatever boat you get, make sure you've got a a good anchor and plenty of rode ... always makes for a more peaceful sleep at night ;)

"There is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." (quote from Wind in the Willows).

Its about right too I reckon - Whether its an 8' tinny or a 50' ketch doesn't matter - get out there!

Thanks for the advice here guys. I've been on a sailing yacht and it was great fun. Also been deep sea fishing it was also great. I would love a boat like trainspotters, complete with crew lol, but guess I'll have to settle for something smaller for now.

Is it best to buy in queensland or victoria?

I am thinking of something to maybe live on board and cruise the east coast. I remeber meeting an old sea dog some years back who used to cruise up and down the coast from darwin to cairns and further down. Told me he used to follow the weather. Sounds kind of great . Anyone done or doing this sort of thing

I went on a racing yacht and it was a nightmare. Living your life in 15 minute segments is not my idea of a good time. *If we can just get through the next 15 minutes we will be fine* :(

Sounds to me like you should be looking for at least a 45 foot cruiser. This size is still manageable with 2 crew plus skipper and has a little bit of luxury. Cabins, shower and toilet facilities, kitchenette, reasonable amount of storage space. I would imagine there would be plenty available in QLD areas in various condition and prices. The areas of concern that I see is that it is all very romantic in its idealogy. When the wind picks up and the rain squall hits at 45 knots it loses it's appeal real quick. If you do decide to go down this path make sure you have the VERY BEST that money can buy in the way of communications, charting and navigation equipment and safety products. The best kind of boat is someone elses. He takes all the risks as it his responsibilty to ensure everybodies welfare is his main priority. And he foots all the costs as well !! :D

Some more toys that I plunder the ocean with.

Thanks for the advice trainspotter. Nice collection you have there! I assume you enjoy fishing as well?

Hey nice links there. Think I might be a bit too ambitious trying to sail one though. Might go with your advice and get something which doesn't rely on mother nature.

There is only one rule I follow now. NO MOTOR ... NO GO. Sailpower is not for me.

There is only one rule when you own a boat WITH a motor. DO NOT HIT ANYTHING. Everything else is forgiveable. You can lose a man over the side and not get the blame. You can break down in the middle of the ocean an not get the blame. You hit anything and I mean anything and you are hung out to dry by the authorities and your mates will let you know for the rest of your natural born days. (not that I would know, I have just heard rumours)
