It’s the first Tuesday in November, Melbourne Cup Day. It’s the one day of the year when even Sydney embraces all things Melbourne. It’s also the day when millions of Australians have their only flutter for the year.
In the interests of helping these occasional punters sort the wood from the chaff, Business Insider launched this statistical guide to the Melbourne Cup back in 2013.
Lightning struck twice and we picked Fiorente, the winner of the 2013 Cup, and then followed up with a win with Protectionist in last year’s cup. So the pressure is on today...

Lets see if they get back to their winning ways next year hey? I wonder what the odds are for a woman winning it back to back? Unlikely given how difficult it is for a woman to get the opportunity to get a ride in the race. However, there was only room for joy for the team that created history with Prince of Penzance. Payne used her moment in the sun to speak out about the “chauvinistic” horse racing industry, saying she hopes her historic breakthrough will encourage more female jockeys to follow in her footsteps. “To think that Darren Weir has given me a go and it’s such a chauvinistic sport, I know some of the owners were keen to kick me off, and John Richards and Darren stuck strongly with me, and I put in all the effort I could and galloped him all I could because I thought he had what it takes to win the Melbourne Cup and I can’t say how grateful I am to them,” Payne told Channel Seven. “I want to say to everyone else, get stuffed, because women can do anything and we can beat the world. “This is everybody’s dream as a jockey in Australia and now probably the world. And I dreamt about it from when I was five years old and there is an interview from my school friends, they were teasing me about, when I was about seven, and I said, “I’m going to win the Melbourne Cup” and they always give me a bit of grief about it and I can’t believe we’ve done it. “I was lying in bed last night and I thought about what it would be like if I was talking to you after this race. “When I wanted this horse as a three-year-old, he won here and I thought this is a Melbourne Cup horse and he just felt like he would run the two mile out that strong but far out, I didn’t think he’d be that strong. He was still towing me into the straight. He just burst to the front and he was powering through, it’s just unbelievable.” Weir, who is based out of Miners Ridge, on the outskirts of Ballarat in Victoria, promised there will be party in his home town tonight.
He said he told his connections he was hoping for a top 10 finish. “This is an unbelievable feeling,” Weir said. “What an absolute thrill and what a credit to the team. “This has got harder every year. I keep saying to the owners it’s hard enough to get in it, let alone win it. I thought, maybe we could push for the top 10.” It was his first Melbourne Cup win on a day of firsts for Australian sport.
A FEMALE jockey has won the Melbourne Cup for the first time in its history after Prince of Penzance produced one of the biggest upsets in Australian sport to win the 155th running of Australia’s greatest race. Jockey Michelle Payne steered the unfancied ride to break away from the field at the 150m line before exploding to a half-length win. Payne’s milestone moment comes 100 years after Mrs E A Widdis became the first female to own a Cup winner. In one of the biggest upsets in Australian sport Prince of Penzance was considered a $100 shot with TAB before the race after drawing barrier one. It means if you were to put a lazy $5 on the now-famous horse you would have won a return of $500 from the bookies.
