Long Term Investors Sound Off Here

well the economy and the direction correlation with the markets broke back then
when some governments overtly/covertly picked winners

maybe some pre-GFC wisdom is still valid , but some things have changed
I think the true investment wisdom doesn’t really change over time, what was true before the GFC is true today.

But the GFC probably highlighted a lot of dumb ideas that people thought was wisdom.

I would have thought the GFC would have been a great time to just lean even harder into that strategy you outlined. it was a wonderful time for long term investors.

well judging from my experiences in 2011 , big downturns are great if you had some available cash ( i had just inherited two estates and a share portfolio )

no ready cash or GASP ! outstanding debt levels , i reckon it might have been downright scary , especially if 'safe' banks were looking like crumbling

Asset Manager Profit Margins Get Thinner

a very important trend for me as i hold several fund MANAGERS ( just not ones fixated on the US markets )

not a very good pairing with the wider trend of 'funds under management ' outflows

but then maybe some of these managers will find a strategy to keep investors , investing through their company

maybe some more pain coming in this area ?

My experience with the Florida based ASX listed GQG , has been the opposite of your Aussie fund managers.

It seems every 1/4 this lot will announce another $ Billion increase in F. U. M .

The downside to U.S. investment of course is the 15 % with- holding tax and no franking of dividends .

A bit of an annoyance with a large shareholding , I suppose , but at least these managers are focused more on capital gain than generating taxable income every quarter .

I'm aware of this thread but feel it's too early to make any meaningful commentary

I only have two investments held for over 25 years and they are Berkshire Hathaway NYSE:BRK.B https://www.berkshirehathaway.com/ and North Atlantic Smaller Companies Investment Trust https://www.nascit.co.uk/?rt=6694e9a9dde76

Warren Buffett and the late Charlie Munger only hold/held one share, of course, Berkshire Hathaway. The North Atlantic Investment Trust was advised to me in 2001 after the Dot-Com debacle and slump in World markets.

Not quite true, Charlie held quite a few different shares, Costco being one of his favourite, and Warren has famously said he is only 99% Berkshire Hathaway, he has a personal portfolio outside of Berkshire.

Warren Buffet holds only one share personally which is close to half of Berkshire Hathaway. He has recently given away $5 billion of stock to a charity. Comments he makes are in his positions within Berkshire so all trades mentioned are these. Charlie Munger did advise people at an AGM of Berkshire that people should hold 100% Berkshire shares but did backtrack a bit in conversation with Warren Buffett. Berkshire I believe has only once invested $2.4 billion in a gold share, Barrick, sold last year from memory - good luck.

No, that’s not true, as I said Buffett has other investments outside of Berkshire, how else do you think he lives day to day, with Berkshire not paying a dividend, Berkshire only pays him $150k a year in wages and hands that back to offset his security costs.

If you look you can find many times Buffett talks about his own investment portfolio, Google “Buffett investing in Korea” and you will find some stuff, all that was his private portfolio.

One thing the guy in the video miss, is that although Apple is 50% of Berkshires stock portfolio, it’s not 50% of their total portfolio.

For example Besides their stock portfolio (of which apple is about 50%), Berkshire also owns a whole host of companies 100% and also $165 Billion in cash, so Apple is only about 20% of Berkshires assets.

So when you factor in Berkshires Energy Business, Railway, precision cast parts, insurance businesses, pilot flying J, Clayton homes, Marmons, Nebraska furniture mart, Shaw floorings, acme bricks, Forrest river, Duracell, Benjamin more paints, fruit of the loom, Dairy Queen, Net jets etc etc etc Apple is not 50%

The fresh details of Buffett's portfolio help explain how he pays his bills. After all, he only collects a $100,000 salary from Berkshire, and pays back half that amount to the company each year.

Creative accounting.
  • Salary $100,000
  • Sold nearly $500 million of stocks over 20 year
  • Private holdings reportedly included Wells Fargo, Walmart, and Johnson & Johnson.

He and Bill Gates have been friends for a long time.
The donations will be ending soon.
I wonder why he will not be donating the majority of his assets and cash to charities. It is not as if his kids need it.

Your portfolio may not be as well diversified as you think – Part 1/2

now my investments may not be as internationally diverse as i would like , i consider the US and EU disasters waiting to happen

the NZ exposure is comfortable for me ( at least they admit they are in a recession )

India and Indonesia are where i am carefully looking for extra exposure , Africa i am watching and watching and South-easy Asia as well

good luck trying to get it correct

For the contrarians amongst our members with a view to the future, Energy stocks are performing very badly on the ASX this year. Information technology are the best.

PS i sold down WDS in April last year @ $34.25 ( to help fund an alternative purchase )

probably sub $20 will have me thinking for WDS , but it really does have to show it hasn't choked on the BHP assets
