Lets bring back the Trading and Investing focus to ASF!

Should ASF have less politics and focus more trading and investing?

From someone who runs a SMSF, I run about 60% dividend shares with franking credits and about 40% cash. It gives me a return of about 7%, which supports my pension.
Day trading isn't my bag, and with the economy not showing any significant signs of upside, all I comment on is shares that interest me and are not speculative.
It might not be exciting, but when it is your sole source of income, you don't want it exciting. Just my opinion.
When it comes to trading, there seem to be plenty of learned charters and traders on the forum, they seem to post on shares they have knowledge on unlike some forums where ramping is rampant. IMO

Well, it depends on what list of posts or threads you're after.

If you want a list of all recently updated threads, just click on the "View All Recent Posts" link at the bottom of the "Recent Posts" sidebar.



The green "New Posts" button near the top will give you a list of all recently updated threads but the ones you read will disappear from the list until someone else posts in them.

Alternatively, you could start watching threads you are interested in by clicking the "Watch Thread" link you will find at the top of each page of a thread.


When you've got a good list of threads you're watching you just go to "Your News Feed" in the "Account" drop down menu and select "Watched Threads" from the menu at the left.




If you're following other ASF members, the threads they are posting in will show up in the "Your News Feed" page.

This software has a lot of options for customising the content you want to see. If you have any more questions just ask.

Well, it looks like it's virtually unanimous. 84.6% of the 26 respondents to CanOz's poll would like to see more trading and investment discussion at ASF. For the record, I agree with those in the majority and support CanOz's initiative.

We've had some great ideas already, such as a dedicated day trading thread for the active traders at ASF. Please feel free to make any other suggestions that you think will stimulate more trading and investment discussion. I'm all ears.

I hope that the 22 people who voted yes in the poll (and those who haven't yet voted but agree with them) will lead by example and do their best to assist in increasing the amount of discussion in trading and investment related threads.

Most importantly, please be nice to others. Some of the feedback I have received privately in recent times is that some are reluctant to post due to fear that their views will be denigrated, disparaged, mocked or they will otherwise be treated with rudeness. So please always be encouraging, supportive and constructive and help build a welcoming, friendly atmopshere here at ASF.

And to those who are reading this but unregistered, please consider signing up and becoming an active part of the ASF community. It'd be great to have you on board.

I am on other Aust. forums and I find them more one post comments rather than an exchange of thoughts, ideas (discussion). One post pump or dumps (might add some are very experienced with their presentation pump) which can be good for a heads up but forget discussion.

I reckon some of the more experienced traders and investors here could be more polite and constructive or don't comment at all. Sure, point out the facts and realities of "their experiences" but don't shoot people down when they present their own experiences and beliefs. We are all at different levels so it is good to be tolerant and helpful.

Finally, most forums have a general chat section. Maybe this can be segregated from the Trading and Investment chat so it is only accessible by choice?
 
I use to be able to exclude the General Chat forum from the "New Posts" search results. I don't know if that can still be done. That was a feature that made the fora much more usable for me.

You can still ignore General Chat.

Click this link > General Chat

Then click "ignore forum"... top right of page.


Tick all the boxes and you should be right
 
Anyolehow, just great to see tech /a way out in front for this month's stock tipping.

There is disquiet in the markets and I feel it even on the street in the community. This is making us all hesitant and undecided. I have always followed fundamentals and trusted in an honest trading system. Right or wrong I've lost faith and sit on the sidelines.

But tech/ trusts in the psychology of what is coldly going on now. Charts measure only that and is why his faith in the grounswell of crowd movement (unwavering sentiment) wins out. Take my hat off to one of our greatest ASF members.
 


A whole different game now as you have identified explod. The buy and hold used to to be the stable footing but there just seems to be too many external influences and factors that put good companies on the back foot.
Fundamentals from six months ago no longer seem to be enough enough to sustain a further six months of price growth.
The growth in dividend yield is a result of falling stock prices in most cases.

Look at CBA media stuff today, behaviour of VOC and TLS, even the big priced stocks like COH have an enter and take profit behaviour.

The tech/a and peter2 take no prisoners approach seems to be both the safest and most profitable in uncertain times.

Absolutely, but I've discovered you can't force people to do what you want them to do. They do what they want to do irrespective of whether it is good for the community or not.

I'd like 90% of posts on ASF to be about stocks, trading and investing but there are a handful of people here who would be happy to turn ASF into a forum focused on politics and other controversial issues. I don't want ASF to be a General Chat forum and if that happens I'll just turn out the lights and put the forum into read only mode as a permanent online resource.

Even knowing that, there are some who would still never post about investing or trading and would just keep on doing what they are doing. The reality is we live in an increasingly selfish world where many take much more than they give.
 
What effect do people think that politics has on the stock market ?

Will Trumps re-election have no/little/large effect?

If Trump implements tariffs and restrictive trading what will that do to the Australian economy?

If Labor loses will that be good for the market or bad?

What effect does the energy policy of both sides have on investment prospects in various sectors?

People are just kidding themselves if they think that stock markets are worlds of their own unaffected by whoever is in government.

Everything is connected to everything else.

And as for trading, I've even heard it said on this forum that some individuals have a system but they are not going to tell the rest of us about it because it would ruin the effect.
