Should ASF have less politics and focus more trading and investing?

ASF is dying, post are dropping off. To be honest i'd rather see whats happening on another forum that is heavy on trading and doesn't tolerate political crap. If i want politics i'll visit the ABC...

Lets bring back trading and investing to ASF where it is a sole focus! I miss the old ASF!
 
ASF is organised into categories such that if people want to comment on trading an investing, they can do so in that area, and if they want to comment on politics then they can do so in general chat. You don't have to visit General Chat if you don't want to, nor do people HAVE to comment in the investment section if they don't want to.

Surely it's just a matter of free choice of individual members ?
 
Politics of relevance to trading / investing and the general economy has a relevant place but agreed there's too much focus on other stuff relative to discussion about investing.

Unfortunately the truth is that if ASF was as it would suggest a
Stock Forum it wouldn't exist. Joe has to do what he has to to
Keep this forum going.

But due to market conditions it's pretty hard to turn a buck

If it was a screaming bull market there would be prolific
Posting on stock market topics.
 

Totally agree. A lot of us older posters hardly post now. Plus it seems to be a pissing contest a lot of the time which puts a lot of people off.

Wrong use of words. By "Older posters" I meant more experienced...the ones that have been around since ASF first started. All forum posts have declined and brokers etc. are finding it tough. Purely market conditions. A bull market would see posts triple in a few months. Bear market bounces and frustration cause most to quit and look for a quick buck elsewhere.

I was in Noosa last week and the taxi driver didn't give one stock tip!!! Sign of the tough times.
 
The solution isn't to post less but to post more, especially in trading and investment related threads. Those who want to see more trading and investment related discussions, please participate in those threads and avoid the General Chat forum. If you have a good idea for a thread, go ahead and start it.

ASF is still a great community and there are great discussions happening here. This thread is a perfect example of that. I agree market conditions are not ideal at the moment and haven't been for a while, but things will change.
 
The future of energy generation and storage thread is an excellent example of a thread that is not exactly investment related but has provided some great information on the electricity market , generation , distribution etc thanks to some excellent expert information.

Interest in the Stock Market is sure to wax and wane over time and the political / social/ science threads help to keep the site active when the share market drops off.

There is more to life than shuffling bits of paper around and I'm sure that people here have many more abilities and interests than just investing, but if the consensus is that general discussion is not welcome here then I for one would be glad to oblige by going elsewhere.

I suggest a real problem of the stock market is that it has become increasingly difficult to find actual investment opportunities that will translate into worthwhile results.

IMV almost all profits are transitory and dependent on pump and dump operations either by external actors or company directors creating stories that fall apart within weeks/months. The incessant printing of new capital by companies (mostly to directors and friends) whenever the slightest piece of good news is issued continues to dampen SP growth and just fills the pockets of directors/brokers.

I'm sure some astute traders are making a buck but that is a zero sum game and relies on plenty of woodducks to lose money. Most of those have died or fled by now.

Perhaps the road to practical and profitable investment lies outside the stock market ?

Maybe there is room for a "Small Business" section where members can share their experiences in starting and running small businesses. It may inspire others to do the same or make them aware of possible pitfalls.
 

I agree with bass, shares ain't where its at for those that dabble right now. My enthusiasm isn't really there for stocks at the moment.
Books on share investment are almost non existent showing that shares ain't that hot. Actually bookstores are almost non existent so newbies can't just pick up a book.
Suppose its all online or facebook now. I just think the enthusiasm for share trading isn't there, bass gives some good reasons as to why not as well. Company directors making bad decisions.

Hotcopper pump and dumps on the minnows is how I'm trading right now, sporadically.
 
Maybe I just don't know the ins and outs of using the stock threads, but I rarely use them because they are cumbersome to get to the topics I want. I don't want to search by ticker or drill down using A-D or whatever. I want a list of all posts based on a watch list I set up, with the newest up front. Unfortunately I can only get this on Hotcopper as far as I can see (and that too could be improved). I have about 30 stocks in my portfolio and have no intention of checking each one every day to see if there has been any new comments, if checking means having to find the relevant thread for the ticker first.

Flog them to the sharks on "Shark Tank" and they will point out where the pitfalls are.

Agree.
Tend to trade more frequently rather than investing.

Perhaps double top on the monthly XAO chart, are making the fund managers more cautious. Quick bites and they are out, retailers ie. you & me get eaten alive.

I think the equity culture especially of small caps is competing with derivatives,fx etc market maker bookies and futures etc. Not to mention that cyrpto currencies have absolutely exploded. I saw that you can get them at the news agency the other day. Far out

Almost everyone in the younger demographic knows about all the currencies and wants to speculate in it. I hardly know anyone who wants to get in on the small caps.

The retail market, is running scared, of the Amazon armageddon.
The financial sector, is about to implode, on the back of the housing and debt bubble.
The resources sector has had a rebound, but no one has any faith in it.
Manufacturing is disappearing into folklore.

What sector do you want to discuss, regarding investment. lol

I don't think it is really that bad, but IMO we have a way to go before we start to see an upswing in investor confidence, currently those who are dependent on dividends are keeping it afloat. IMO

We used to have threads like this one that were for general ASX market discussion.

A day trading thread sounds like a great idea. People could chat about whatever markets they were watching and the kind of trading set ups they were looking for. It would be a great way to alert others to markets, indices or stocks that were seeing movement or activity.

If it was just a general day trading thread, it could be located in the Trading Strategies/Systems forum. It would be good to see an active trading thread. Any takers?

Same here. If there's one change I could make to ASF it would be to have the ability to log in and see all posts that have been updated since I last logged in. Even better if I could set a filter on that but just a complete list would help.

As for the general chat section and comments from others, my personal view is that the problem isn't that there's too much general chat but rather that there's not enough posts about stocks. There's a difference there and having less general chat wouldn't help at all.

So far as the markets are concerned, well I'm thinking about posting some more details of the approach I've been using but at this point I'll just say that as of February 2017 I had 91% of the portfolio invested in stocks and 9% in cash. As of today it's 15% in stocks, 63% cash and 22% in other things.

So I'm just not overly excited about stocks at the moment as a whole. Not a lot of value out there in the market right now.
