I live in Brimbank and am constantly disgusted how food is handled in our shops, the council requires that they have a food handling progam yet only checks these shops 2 times a year. The health department apparently only gets involved if the problem is so big that it becomes a major issue, problems I have encountered, someone blowing her nose in the sink in full public view, handling money at the same time as food, the local health department assured me this is not a problem  finding worms in fresh fish, meat handled with ungloved hands etc...what do you all think is this a major problem anywhere else?

Re: Lack of Hygiene

It is interesting - we have a salmonella outbreak in Adelaide at the moment. Maybe interstate people have heard about SA's egg war where our local market has been flooded with very cheap interstate eggs in an effort to drive out the local trade - free trade they call it! Except the eggs are usually the rejects you guys dont want! So they are cracked, small, old etc.

Well, on the weekend the SA Health Dept named a pasta company that used these eggs and of 30 people ill, 17 (?) had consumed the pasta, raw  I believe which is why they got sick.

However the Health Dept WONT name the egg supplier - yet it is implicated in all the cases so far!

If the eggs are cooked they are OK, but people who consume raw eggs (eg egg flips, body builders etc) will get sick if the egg is contaminated.

Go figure - the pasta company gets the total raw deal!

Re: Lack of Hygiene

Prospector,I have spent the better part of two hours trying to involve the health department of Victoria in this problem, however they assure me that unless the problem gets to the SA proportion than its up to the local department ,who doesnt really see a problem at all, money they assure me is not that dirty in fact its been found not to carry germs at all.And they already do 2 inspections a year,at a minimum.Personally I doubt that the legislation has any teeth if at all.Maybe we should all start a letter writing campaign to force these people into prevention rather cure.

Current Affairs and Today Tonight possibly 60-Minutes and maybe Sunday could be interested.

First 2 run several hidden camera segments and with big knee jerk reaction almost overnight, but authorities interest in hygiene is pretty low by the look of things.

Haven't you noticed that nearly every year or every 6 months commercial TV current affairs always runs a cover story on this topic.

I hope the health authorities are doing their job...

Perhaps the best way to test whether or not the food is good is if the restaurant is "busy".

Re: Lack of Hygiene- food handling

Rang today tonight, only consider a story if I would identify myself,my husband almost had a stroke.so out went that option.
tried emailing bronwyn pyke, email kept coming back, rang her office possibly 6 times, secretary finally gave me someonelse email still no go,faxed her instead. :banghead:

Happy you are absolutely right food hygiene is abosulutely the last thing on these peoples minds until and unless someone dies, then once it makes the news, the hand wringing will start and of course the blaming until the media stops paying attention then back to bases.

I used to help out in a school canteen, they had the whole thing worked out.If the inspectors came they would have to go through the office being a school and all,so that gave them enough time to wipe everything down and get rid of the recycled food, such as hot dogs left over from the day before chicken burgers with lettuce and mayonaise toast and cheese ect..imagine your kids eating that crap.Plus the manager knew the inspector,he was the one who runs the food hygiene program. :banghead:

Hi Visual

To give us west coasters an idea, where is Brimbank and is there a significance about that area we wouldn't know about?

TIA

Cheers

Re: Lack of Hygiene- food handling

Wayne,
Brimbank is the council that covers parts of the western suburbs of Melbourne. The only significance I suppose would be in the disantvantage thats common around here.Which maybe explains why health regulation are optional as is everything else, like good school, health care road,ect... :banghead:
