Karmichael to sign with Gold Coast....AFL!!!

The only successfull change of sporting codes has been Anthony Mundine. From NRL to a boxing chump. All others FAIL. Wendell Sailor for instance. NRL to ARL and back again.

Please... accurate kicking, passing, tackling is the essence of rugby league, not to mention keeping control of the ball which I noticed lacks in AFL.

Accurate kicking - I thought there was only 1 guy (the 5/8) who kicks the ball while live play is happening! You can't say grubber kicks or kicking for touch is a kicking skill.

Passing - If you are saying throwing a ball requires skill.Try asking a kid to throw the ball to you , then ask him to hand pass it.

Tackling - In Rugby running into tackle requires strength and some skill.Tackling in AFL is arguably harder because the tackle can come from any angle and the ball is the target as well as the man.

Keeping control of the ball - Well of course in a game (NRL) where the skill requirement is not as high it is easier to keep control of the ball. This is posession football. They try to keep control in AFL but the goal of the opposition is to force them to kick to a competion which is where turn overs happen.

In comparing the the two as far as skill levels go is like comparing a formula 1 driver with your local Go cart champion. Not in the same league!AFL Rules!

He did play as a kid. He might have enough basic skills to develop. Is he quick enough? He is only standard height so he needs to be good.

The skillset required for a transition to AFL is vastly different to NRL. I hope he does well but do not have high hopes.

Watched on the news tonight a segment on Mr Hunt and his merry team of Broncos. They saw the funny side of it and decided to train as an AfL team. Kicking the Sherrin FAIL. Handballing the Sherrin FAIL. Running for 26 kilometres for 100 minutes FAIL. Need I go on?

Fark all de comparisons to Rugby v League v Football v AFL.

Come September and there are 95,000 people filling the MCG, THAT is where it is at.

because macquack i was responding to the endless, mindless pro NRL posts lined up before me. im not going to get involved in the 'whos game is more skilful' chatter - i am simply going to put down a game that solely survives due to the cash support of murdoch & packer.

I just saw CM Hunt's interview on the footy show.

He played about 8 games in high school. They showed him kick.whoops!

He seems keen!Good luck to him! Bad luck NRL!!

A couple of things are certain:
He will probably make the AFL boys cry when he starts knocking them around
His voice no doubt will change pitch after wearing the shorts.

Cheers

God, I take the piss in one post and you get all upset. Reach into your handbag and grab a tampon.

I'm actually a union support btw

Good on him for coming out of the closet. No shame in him being a fairy in this day and age

Strange that you should say that. It was in a cubicle in a nightclub toilet that K. Hunt achieved notoriety. The Broncos' management, as an afterthought, fined him for bringing the club into disrepute. As you can see by this thread, they should have given him a bonus.

Make the AFL boys cry? Only if they are stupid enough to run straight at him. I'd rather match up on K Hunt than Dean Solomon or Adam McPhee.

I think a lot of people here have missed the real points arising out of Hunts signing.

The question of "How will he go?" is largely irrelevant.

While the AFL would like him to be successful for sure - he is the presence that the Gold Coast side and the AFL need in Qld.

It is not about getting "Bob and Barry" the diehard Bronco supporters to follow AFL, but it is all about getting 13,14,15 year old kids who are talented athletes in NSW and Qld starting to think - "Wow I could give this a go? That's another option. I'll keep that up my sleave".

It is already the biggest AFL story ever - according to media ratings. Apparently over 1000 mentions in 24 hour period. The previous biggest was Ben Cousins drug controversy at 630 mentions.

The Daily Telegraph dedicated 6 pages to it. It was the leading story on Channel 9 Sydney and No 2 at 7 and 10. The Courier Mail had it front and back page!! Andrew Demetriou needs to be congratulated - Hunt has paid for himself almost immediately in promotion and news coverage. And will continue to do so over the next 24 months.

The other big factor are TV rights. With both the AFL and NRL broadcasting right due soon the AFL have taken huge steps to sure up their product. TV broadcasters are about exposure and they will now being looking at the AFL "big picture" in relation to Qld and NSW (always the weak link for AFL).

Will this cause an avalanche of players to switch to AFL? No way. To be honest not many would be able to make the transition. But the AFL don't want todays NRL players - they want tomorrows NRL players. People that are worried about losing Billy Slater and Greg Inglis are being short sighted.

Will it creat opportunities for AFL players to move to NRL? I very much doubt it. Firstly the base pay for AFL is higher, secondly the level of League knowledge in AFL states is almost non-existent and lastly I think it is much easier to identify someone in League that could have the skills to be good at AFL, than vice versa.

The skill sets are quite different due to the opposite ideologies of the game. Basically in AFL there is no offside and you get penalised for being tackled with the ball. In League there is offside and you are allowed to be tackled with the ball. This creates two completely different skill sets.

In my opinion, at best he will become a "capable player" that manages to hold his spot in the side (at least initially). He will need some serious work done on his kicking and marking and that is before we even talk about his positional play. It is one thing to "take a bomb" it is another to mark overhead, running full pelt with a defender leaning over your shoulder. Again, it is one thing to kick to space or for touch, but another to kick a 50m stab pass under pressure, laces out to a forward running full pelt on the lead. That is standard expectation of an AFL player.

A great deal is being made of his defensive capabilities - but again these will not be instantly evident. AFL is a contact sport - Rugby League is a collision sport. Hunt will not be able to "line players up" like he does in League.

But once again - his worth to the Gold Coast club and AFL is not based entirely on his future skill set but rather who he is and what he has already achieved and the generation of a "buzz" in NRL heartland.

Good points Duckman, although I don't think NRL are going to take this lying down. They are bound to fight back if only for their very existence.

Cheers

I agree Buckaroo. They will look at trumping this somehow.

Although at the moment with the year the NRL is having, this latest setback would have them reeling. They need to do something but I'm just not sure what.

Doing a "vice-versa" wouldn't stack up for the NRL. For the AFL, I can see the "short, medium and long term" benefit of grabbing Hunt, keeping him in Qld and get him playing the code.

I think League is ultimately going to draw the line at Western Sydney. The AFL is thinking outside the square. They know they are up against it but are working proactively. They have suggested that they are going to create a "nursery" for NSW elite athletes (read - not AFL players). Where students can go to an exclusive school with tutition fees paid by the AFL. By 17 they will be potential first round draft picks by Sydney. Sydney kids staying in Sydney.

The NRL knows that the Gold Coast is "a bit of everything" for sport, but the real body blow would be taking the Sydney fortress.

It will be interesting how he handles getting hit/tackled from different angles without the normal NRL 3 second warning of "Im about to get tackled".He will be targetted when he starts so we will find out fast who will be crying "Yes".

I never realised NRL fans really thought Flared shorts looked good.Do you wear flares in fashion wear shorts aswell?

Ohhh I'm sure he's $hiting himself He broke onto the scene as a 17year old playing 1st grade NRL and neve looked out of place.

"hit/tackled from different angles" No idea about NRL obviously.

They can start by looking at how much money is wasted on juniors who never make it to 1st grade.

It's the wake up call they needed, and deserved. I heard this morning that Greg Inglas would consider giving it a crack. This is not good news and I'd imagine there are a few others now wondering about the bottom line $.
Some agents have been busy, no doubt
