That is ridiculous. I really hope no one applies for jobs with them and they have to reverse that policy. I am sure though that there will be people that will be willing to pay it. Another question that I wondering is will this help them atract the staff they are looking for or just people who are willing to pay the fee?

I went for a job interview recently and I forked out $49 too for a police clearance. Many employers expect this now-days

What are the tax implications? Seems to me that the cost for every potential employee is deductible for the employer, but is the cost of every application deductible for jobseekers, and is it refunded to those who don't find a job in the year in which they pay?

Maybe the cost recovery should apply only to after tax costs. Which would mean that employers would have to make their tax returns publicly available. Now there's an unintended consequence!!

Just out of curiousity do you get a letter or form (or something) with a police clearance so that it can be used more than once? Or do you need to pay that much for each prospective employer that asks for it?

Yes you get a letter, that proves no criminal convictions, so I guess its money well spent.

Plenty of jobs require them these days:

Teachers
Cleaners
Health Support Workers
Child Care Workers
Airline industry jobs
Security

etc

Jetstar has defended a decision to charge fees for parts of its employee interview process.
The Qantas subsidiary says it is the group's policy to charge the two separate fees, totalling $89.
The charges apply for security and personality tests for applicants wanting to become long-haul flight attendants.
Jetstar spokesman Simon Westaway says the charges are standard practice.
"We don't see it as a significant issue, indeed it's part of Qantas Group policy and Jetstar is applying it,' he said.
"Many other airlines around the world are doing the same thing."

Many other … are doing the same thing - it shouldn’t take long to become standard practice, after all we pay loan application fee, various licenses fee, including license like uni degree.

However when they go hunting for flight attentants in low paid countries ,will they charge this fee in exchange for an interview or will all that be taken in consideration when they are offered a portion of the Australian flight attentands wage.

What about the %^$&$%*% "personality test"? The applicants probably have no right to see the results, let alone take them away, and if the test has any meaning at all (which I doubt) it should be specific to the particular company and job. But the applicants have to pay for it!! What about the cost of the applicants' time in sitting through it. Anyone invoicing for that???

this will be called a shortage skill,once people refuse to pay the 89 dollars,
after all can you imagine the explanation,Qantas was uanble to recruit enough people for its Jetstar vacancies,so had to go overseas.
And the government and the company will quote all the other positions the same people are taking up in Australia already.

Yesterday,it was reported that even truck drivers were being or were in the process of being imported,give me a break a shortage of truck drivers,Bet you anything that if the Australian truck drivers were being paid enough to allow them to have a decent lifestyle they would fill the jobs quick smart,

This is not only wrong; it's insane.

I don't think it's wrong at all. Jetstar is simply trying to recover some of the costs in the interview process. I'm sure one of the positive effects of charging "$40 for a personality test and $49 for a security check" is that it would weed out prospective applicants who are not really that interested in the job. If you are going to have to pay $89 to apply, you are most likely going to be serious about your application. The fact that "Jetstar had already received 1,000 "expressions of interest" for 240 jobs being offered" proves that it isn't wrong (or insane ).

If Jetstar is unsuccessful in recruiting employees, then perhaps they will then waive the current fee. It's simple though, if you think it's a ripoff to have to pay them money just to apply... Then don't apply!

These types of interviews are notorious for the small number of people who make it all the way,based on the number of people who apply.So in effect a good money spinner!

Yes, but first before they decide they have to follow their recruitment policy which involves obtaining a police clearance and then having to conduct a 'personality test'.

I haven't had to do a personality test before. Well.. I did do one at the church of scientology, but I think that may be a lil different :.

I don't know how effective those particular personality tests are. If it is anything like the one you had to endure, then I do have my doubts! But obviously Jetstar believes that it gives them data that they feel helps them in finding the right recruit. (And also that the 'elasticity' is high enough, that they can charge the applicants for it).

My personality test was for a QANTAS job,

But anyway all this is about creating a shortage skill so when the unions create an uproar they can point to the low number of interested applicants and justify going overseas to fill the positions.

Your probably correct here Visual ,perhaps the interviews will be conducted in Nauru,detention centre.....need I suggest the interviewee, & 'ers should pay for their own flights there also,you know iguano iguano iguano...
