Some help please

I wish to purchase a charting software and was wondering if anybody is using the Guppy charting package.

Have done a search on this forum and read a few recommendations.
At the moment I am using Incredible_charts which does most of what I need.. the only problem is that you have to be connected to the net for it to work.

Eventually I hope to be able to purchase the expensive packages .. Bull, Megastock etc .... after hopefully making some returns from my trading.
I should probably spend the $1000 for the above but at the moment I am too inexperienced to get full use of all that they offer, and need to preserve my limited capital.

Experience will come with time (if I don't lose my trading capital of course)
so I am looking to cut my teeth on a mid price package for the time being.

I did download from the Guppy site to try it out but the free trial expired too quickly before I could get into it.

Easy charts is about the same price... any opinions on that would also be appreciated.

I will consider all advice and be grateful for any help.

Thanks
Ron

I think charting packages are quite a personal thing. I personally like Amibroker because it gives you lots of control and the ability to customise everything.

I would suggest you email Daryl and ask for a longer trial if you're seriously considering purchasing his software.

you can pick up megastock v9 for under $100 au on Ebay @ the moment -- there is around 3 sellers -- I got mine for 25 eruo + 5 eruo postage .
with 14 years axa data -- disk of formulas -- ebook manual all thrown in for free

Cheers

Thanks people for your replies

Coyotte ... the E Bay link is much appreciated... I can get one from an Italian seller for 35euros about $60 I think. version 9

My only question is regarding EOD data ... my current supplier has an .txt or .csv extension,

Can Metastock read that type of format and would I NEED an additional program to transfer that to metastock or has it an in built function that imports automatically once you give it the file name.

As you can see I know very little about charting but would like to learn

A $60 outlay seems like a good way to start ... or am I being naive and there is a catch somewhere

Many thanks
Rob

I have only just received my copy from Spain --- Seems to be working o/k, but i don't know the programme to be sure.

Did buy a copy of Aget from Jakatta from 888shop.com and have had nothing but trouble -- there is a thread on it.

You can get eod data for metastock from cooltrader.com (based in Vic)
they are rebuilding their site -- so a hassle at the moment.
Dealt with them around 4 years ago with Ami and was quite good service.

Free -- non adjusted
$50 -- adjusted after 10.30 pm
$150-- adjusted after 7.30 pm
all annual costs.

MetaStock has dropped in price and you can buy V10 in Ozz for around $500au.

Cheers

Thanks coyote...

I was wondering if I buy a metastock v9 from Ebay if it can be run by me ..or is it supposed to be a ONE user type thing.

In other words when you try to install does it ask for a log on ID number or something like that or would you just install it as a normal program.

Since it is available on EBay I am assuming that it is legel to sell to another person ...

Any problems installing and running your copy from Spain ...

I have EOD data for 6 months in the .txt format ie ...20061201.txt type of thing.

Will the metastock loader understand that format or does it need something else

Regards
Rob

I do'nt no anything about the Guppy software
however my advice would be
>>>DO NOT<<< scrimp on software and data packages buy the best or at least the best you can afford ,do'nt muck about with pirate or "free" services llearn about and understand your software and do'nt get bamboozled by dozens of different indicators . Remember to treat this as a business from day 1,and that there are many traders out there who are going quietly about their business making 100s of % returns on their funds which makes the costs of data and software seem pretty insignificant

Thanks coyotte for the input

Bearman52 ... I understand what you are saying... the Metastock advertised on Ebay is not a pirate but the original (according to the ad)
Besides .. would it not be illegal for EBay to sell pirated software ???

There can be many reasons why the guy is selling ... getting out of the market, upgraded to a better version etc...
My only concern was about the re-sell issue legality. I would never buy a pirated copy of anything (knowingly)

You are right about not getting confused with to many indicators.
The only thing I care about is a RECENT high during the past 90 days.
My entire method is based around that.

Every few months a pop up appears on the screen for Metastock.

Please enter your set up key for verification.

Enter the wrong key or nothing and no more metastock!

I'd suggest taking a look at AmiBroker. Not at all expensive compared to other packages, and very good.

This is what Equis - Metastok producer - has to say about re-sale

Every week Equis has to contact a rep at eBay [or elsewhere] to pull our product(s) off because it is not legal to resell them. It’s in direct violation of our license agreement to resell any of our products. We try to stop the auctions the best that we can, but there are always some that go through. It’s not a fast process and unfortunately it doesn’t stop some from opening another account. Some are selling older versions that aren’t using it anymore and some are mass producing copies and selling them for whatever they can get. The person selling Equis software is the one who is violating the license agreement. The buyer is the one who gets the short end of it because he cannot get free tech support from us or upgrade it to newer versions.

USE OF SOFTWARE: If Equis provides you with Software or access to Software, you may only use Software in accordance with the instructions, and in connection with the Services. You are granted a non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use any Software provided as part of any Service.

LIMITATIONS ON USE:You may only make one copy of the Software for archive or backup purposes. You must erase or destroy any Software upon termination of these Terms. You may not reverse engineer, decompile, or dissemble the Software, except and only to the extent that such activity is expressly permitted by applicable law notwithstanding this limitation. You may not rent, lease or lend or directly or indirectly transfer the Software to any third party.

Thanks guys for all your input... it seems that buying from Ebay may not be a good idea.

I have tried many demos - free trials etc and there is a lot out there to choose from.

I am leaning heavily now towards the latest version 10 of Metastock EOD
Can get it for around $560 which seems like a good discount on the original pricing.

Like I said before I have no interest (at this stage) in live data feed ... that version of Metastock is $1k+ so the EOD version for the above price is probably the way to go.

Any final comments from experienced chartist (who have or are using MS)would be welcome

Many thanks

You can get AmiBroker for US$149.

And it has no problems loading EOD data from those .TXT CSV files, in Metastock text format.

(Sorry, never used Metastock, so can't comment on that software)

If you're just learning and not relying on realtime data, why not try IncredibleCharts or Medved QuoteTracker? Both are free (IC 30Days EOD trial, and 16hours delayed after 30Days), QT has marketing ads removed if you sign up, but otherwise works the same if you don't, as long as the ads don't bother you.
I'm with Commsec which provides some basic charting features, but am playing around with QT linked to the commsec price feed, so I can also get realtime (20 second delay).

IC also has a stock scanning element as well...

Having used both Metastock and Amibroker extensively in the past I prefer Amibroker.

However either package can do what I want to do. It's just that Amibroker is faster than the version of MS (7.2) that I was using and also more flexible when it comes to coding. If you go with Metastock you should check out Roy's Metastock Tips site http://www.metastocktips.co.nz/ and newsletter. If Roy can't code it it can't be coded!

There is quite a learning curve with either package. Avoid illegal copies and free data if you want any sort of support. Also, as already stated, Amibroker is substantially cheaper than Metastock.

What is Guppy's charting package?

This is an old thread but I guess like me people will still be fishing around for charting software, Incredible Charts have just delayed their charts again to the previous day so I downloaded Guppy Charts trial, don't know what I did wrong but it doesn't seem to connect to the net for info at all, ie useless or at least not user freindly :( , guess I might end up paying an Incredible Charts subscription but when you add up all the monthly amounts over the years you realise how "Ãncredibly" expensive it is

Shop around, but no doubt if you want good data you need to pay. If its just a few charts to look at then just buy a copy of AmiBroker and use Yahoo feed.

I would think that if you can afford to trade or invest you can afford the tools?
