Is a new cold war brewing. To tell people the truth i think that russia is a bigger threat to global stability then say terrorism or a war in the middle east. It seems that since Vladimir Putin has taken control of russia he has increasingly flexed his muscles in an attempt to rebuild the soviet union.
Complete state control of media and natural resources, Murders and assasinations of people damaging to the government and the use of their gas reserves to blackmail former soviet states are just a few of incidents that have occured under putins tenure.
What is most worrying though is that russia could turn off the gas to europe plunging it into choas and at the moment the USA is so tied up in iraq and afghanistan they would struggle to have any brokering power. So does russia hold all the cards at the moment and are others concerned. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
I don't think that things are so dramatic. There will be no problems with gas to Europe, like it was last year during the Ukranian gas crisis. Russia must sell it's gas by the market price to everybody, and Lukashenko's regime is no exception.
About the cold war... I don't think that you got to fear Russia in the meantime. It will take another ten + years for Russia to get to the point of replacing USSR in the world, if it ever happens at all.
China and the middle East present a bigger threat.
It is simply representative of history. Don't forget the US has Japan and is nudging them back to a military state propped up by socialist values and capitalism.

This pretty much sums up the situation with the countries that were once part of the Eastern Bloc - as the saying goes it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks and reformed 'communists' who have swapped their coats for social democratic one's are just that - commies.
There is a podcast on Bloomberg about the Russian presidential election next March and the efforts of former world chess champ Garry Kasperov in the political arena.Podcast mentions that Putin may chair the board of Gazprom after his term ends next year.:topic
