Iraq wins the Asian Cup!

In what must be one of the greatest sporting achievements ever, a football team from war torn Iraq with virtually no infrastructure has won the Asian Cup. Striker Younis Mahmoud knocked in the winner to give Iraq a 1-0 win over the Saudis. I mean some of the countries in this cup, including South Koreas and Oz, have made the quarter or semi finals of the World Cup.

What an amazing story. Talk about the ability of sport to triumph over adversity. I am sure those who dare will be dancing on the streets of Baghdad tonight.

To quote Mahmoud,
'I wish we could go back to back, but you just don't know who will kill you!'

To all the Poms on this website, maybe you should naturalise Yousef to give you guys a chance of glory at the World Cup!

At least this makes the Socceroos qrt final defeat palatable. :)

must admit... its a fairytale result....:)
could not be happier for them...
only in sport, esp football, can such things happen.

really do hope that can unite and fight off those islamic extremists now...

Just kiddin' :D. Fantastic and Amazing that Iraq has achieved this.

Bushy, any 'pom' who follows football will tell you that club football is far more important than the national team. Maybe the England national team would be taken more seriously if referred to as the Pommeroos:p:
 
with all the crap they have been though. they really need a positive like this to help lift their spirits.


I just wish they could unit religiously like the soccer team did and kick some goals for winning the game of building a new country.

OH well sorry to be the downer here...but I find it just totally amazing that in a country that is so war torn at the moment...you would think this should be a total joyous moment, yet they still find a way to kill people by shooting guns unnecessarily in the air.
 
i found that unbelievable aswell. 4 people actually died from gun shots as a result of celebrations

Im sure if it were legal in Australia to shoot bullets in the air for celebration we would have a few deaths here too.

My point exactly!!!! Don't they value human life? I can't help but to feel that if my life was so torn by war, terrorism, thugs, and other similar things, the LAST thing I'd want to do is shoot bullets. I'd be so sick of gunfire.

It's not legal here in Australia, because of common sense and a fear of people getting hit and hurt by bullets. I mean it's common sense, what comes up...must come down.

gee you've gotta think that would be worth more than anything.

Anyone else remember Bob Hawkes comment when we won the 1983 Americas Cup? "Any boss who sacks anyone for being late is a bum" etc (paraphrased) lol - not long after he'd been elected. That win was PIVOTAL in raising the morale of the Aussies, and made a great platform for a happy nation for a year or two. (imo)

So hard to translate that for Iraq of course .. without it .. backfiring?

you can't blame the yanks for the car bombs that went off amongst celebrating crowds in the lead up to the finals :banghead:
regardless of whats gone before, you have to be one sick individual to drive your car into celebrating iraqis!

the local papers here in the Gulf actually had a bit of sarcasm for the Aussie boys :

from memory, the news article went something like this :

"...the Australians who arrived as tournament favourites, with many of their players plying their trade in rich European clubs, were totally outclassed and went home with their tails between their legs..."

glad the iraqis won!
