Thank you for contacting me regarding the Rudd Government’s proposed mandatory internet filtering system.
The Federal Coalition supports sensible and workable measures to protect children from inappropriate online content. Obviously, it would make sense to prevent access, if this could be done, to material that would be a crime to possess. When looking at ways to protect children online, the main issues are - what is effective and achievable, and what approach will deliver the best results.
The previous Coalition Government provided all Australian families with access to a free, optional PC-based content filter, which could be specifically tailored to assist parents in protecting their children from being exposed to inappropriate content.
The Rudd Government cancelled this program at the end of 2008 without putting in place any alternative.
Experts say that most predatory risks to children lurk in those areas of the online world that are largely immune to filtering, such as chat rooms, email and peer-to-peer networks.
That is why, in relation to unlawful online activity, it is essential that our nation’s law enforcement bodies are adequately resourced to tackle it in the most sophisticated way possible.
The fact it has taken the Minister two years to produce his plan and release results of filtering trials highlights the complexity and problematic nature of his proposal. The Coalition is yet to be convinced that mandatory filtering will be effective.
The Coalition would like an independent audit of the trial results and we hope this can happen as soon as possible.
The Coalition will continue to consult extensively with the telecommunications industry and other stakeholders to enable a fully informed response, if and when the Government puts forward any formal proposal or legislation.
Yours sincerely

With the change of PM, will it simply be a case of Big Brother being side-stepped for Big Sister with regard to this issue?
PS: I do to much research lol
Or read too many conspiracy sites
Jay Rockefeller: Internet should have never existed
Q: What's your personal view of the opt-out and opt-in provisions that could be added to the filter legislation are they a possibility or a good idea or…
Conroy: I'm not into opting into child pr0n.
Oh dear, Conroy is back to his old tricks again... if you want to opt-out of the filter then you're obviously a paedophile. As the article says, after 2 years of technical argument as to why censorship will not work all he can come up with is this type of rubbish. Can't think of a time I've ever been more disgusted in the political processes in this country.

This was posted a couple of years ago so some may have missed it: https://www.aussiestockforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=368995&highlight=Hitler#post368995IMO, to use child pr0n as their reason for internet filtering could more likely be the excuse to filter any information/news they don't want Oz citizens to see. But then that's probably stating the obvious - lol
....intends to link the information gathered from monitoring your internet activities to identifiers such as your passport number open up the real possibility of mashing together all of the personal information available in your data matching matrix to (your income, your tax history, you bank account details, your medical records for starters) to your online life....
More Orwellian moves:

Well it seems that Herr comrade Julia is painted with the same brush as Herr Dudd.
Now it's time for people to stand up and act.
I will be getting onto my useless federal member and my state senators regarding this draconian mandatory filter. Time to vote against these paranoid politicians that want to put in place the tools of thought control.
Do YOU intend to do anything?
Or do you like the thought that the government of the day can decide (with this mandatory filter) what you can and can't read particularly those things the government thinks you shouldn't read like information they deem against the interests of them staying in power or being able to research the misuse of government power and so on.
This is one step away from a totalitarian state people. Wake up and do something if you don't want to be controlled by the government. If you find what I am saying a bit in your face then so be it - it is the price we all must pay.
People have died for the freedoms you currently enjoy - stop this government from taking those freedoms away and ending up with George Orwell's description: "If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stomping on a human face -- forever."
If you don't want that boot stomping on your face, then act now and tell your federal member and senators you do not want a MANDATORY internet filter. Tell them an OPTIONAL filter maintains our right to freedom from oppressive governments.

It would be good to see the Coalition's position on this.
