Hey MayK.

Have you had much experience with routing under FedoraV8 and wireless support by comparison to V5 which I last used and found it needed more refining. (Was running a wireless node with multiple wireless nics)

Anyone else, if you need help n support with your windows pc, then Linux, Fedora is prob not for you, despite improving leaps n bounds. IMO.

Thanks for the info on Linux, mayk - still a bit daunting for me. I have an old PC thats presently unused, might give it go with Linux and see how I fare.

What will you like to know. I guess basic routing and everthing should not change with fedora version, if you are tech savy with configuration files. GUI is a different matter ( I am currently using fedora core 5 & 6), actually I am running experiments on some 20 machines running fedora, so I cannot go and upgrade the system every time a new version appears on the horizon.


But by the looks of it fedora 8 is among one of the best linux versions around and **should shrugs*** work out of the box , a lot of improvements against fedora core 5.

Which wireless card have you got ? You can use madwifi ( search in google) and intel drivers for most of the cards in the market. Just hang on a few months and linux will provide free driver support :)

For those, like me, who are becoming increasingly visually-challenged (or decreasingly visually unchallenged if you want to be really pc about it:)).
 
Dispensible ..... Well i found msmsg.exe (microsoft messenger i don`t use) was very very annoying.Not only did it keep popping up but it carried infections with it.So on a websearch i found this solution without any rigmarole.

solution: enter this into a Start -> Run box:


RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Press ok, after restarting the computer the error message should be gone

This removes Messenger from the system. If it displays an error message, don't worry, just press OK.


Also if you want to check if you have it or not then bring up Windows Task Manager (Ctrl Alt Del together) and click on processes.Scroll down to see if msmsg.exe is there. :) hth someone
 
a good way to get rid of a lot of the startup rubbish is to go START - RUN - MSCONFIG then go to the STARTUP tab and untick a lot of the rubbish in there like qttask, adobe speed reader and other assorted programs you don't need sitting resident in your system.

Such a good idea - I have stopped a lot of junk loading at startup.

And another "indispensable" I have found is:
"Prio - Process Priority Saver. Free for personal use. This compact program allows you to save the priority you specify for any process."

I have assigned a higher priority to my charting program, broker program and Firefox, which can be done without this program but this program makes the priority change permanent (it is reversible if need be).
 
Indispensable windows tools:

  • PDFCreator. Printer driver for windows for printing to PDF. Super useful when performing online stock/bank transactions. Free, open source.
  • 7-Zip. Archive/compression tool. Free, open source.
  • ImgBurn. CD image/file burning tool. Free, closed-source.

Strongly recommend you trial it and assess. The portable version is also excellent.

Otherwise ...standard ones I couldn't live without are:

- uTorrent
- Firefox
- Comodo firewall 2.4 (the best paid or free option available)
- Nero 6.6
- Acronis TI
- XYplorer
 
In addition to many of the above, I also suggest:

Adaware - a very useful and free adware and spyware remover. Should be used in addition to Crap cleaner

Avast -- free antivirus. Updated regularly. German, I think.

I have been using "Sticky-Notes" - like Post-It notes but for the computer screens - for a while now, really quick and easy way to write important notes to myself and to leave them on my screen as permanent, or semi-permanent, or temporary reminders. I could use them for things like "Buy cat food" but tend to use them for my trading to keep the important stuff in my face ... one is "Focus" (yes, I need reminding).

I think there are a few programs that do this, the one I am using is free from www.Sticky-Notes.net
 
Firefox browser add-ons .... loads of these but two to highlight:

FasterFox ........ install this and it really does speed up Firefox.

NoSquint ............ increasing the size of text on the browser is easy (Ctrl +), but NoSquint remembers the text size you have chosen for each site. Very handy if the eyesight is faltering...
 
Convert Freeware, a tiny program that converts any amount in any unit of measurement to any other. Great for looking at drill results from strange little foreign companies drilling the north pole for strontium or whatever. Or cooking.
Also used on the international space station... apparently.
