Ideal monitor type and size

I will Comsec Professional Trader with plasma when I get back from holidays.
I know of at least one large federal government department that uses a 42" plasma as a mainframe system console; thats 80 columns x 25 rows of green text. Good enough for 'em, good enough for everyone else!

I find LCDs to be easier on the eyes especially if you sit less than a meter away from it. Apart from Chimei 221D I've also heard good things about the dell 24 inch but it costs about 3 times as much. Personally i feel anything above 22-24 inch is too big to use solely as a PC monitor but if you've got a big desk and bigger pockets get an 30" apple M9179X/A for around $3k.

G'day all

Thanks for everyones advise, to date.

More questions:

Anyone like to comment on the screen size?
Whats an ideal size - why?
Is the size a factor of how far away you sit?
Is 24" - 30" too big?
Can a large screen be effectively split in two?
Personally cost is not important - especially if its over a lifetime of 6 years or so.

Cheers

Hey Dutchie,

IMO the entry level lcd's are not the lcd's of choice if you spend the whole day on them, and would advise to perhaps choose second/third (value & clarity considered) from top if your looking for sharpness & clarity, which IMO can be compared to CRT's in a premium consumer brand name lcd.(Philips, Mitsubshi, Perhaps Dell, etc).

I personally would choose the 24" (2407 model, but not 2405) Dell's at under $1100 ea as they are faily decent quality and value, esp since the 30" came out. http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/30lcd?c=au&cs=audhs1&l=en&s=dhs (confirm A06 firmware, and banding problems are resolved)

These Dells and few others can pivot in portrid or landscape mode which may be good in portrid mode for multiple news, depths, cos & watchlists on PT2 and landscape mode for charts. (as shown in video review, but not 24" model below) http://reviews.cnet.com/Dell_UltraSharp_2007FP/4505-3174_7-31783700.html?tag=lst

Currently run 3x19" crt to span PT2 across and couldn't see myself trading with any less, but could def see a 4th monitor in time when the crt's get replaced.

Another inportant consideration when choosing these big monitors is the quality of the video card driving them, and support of the higher resolution & faster refresh rates that you may wish to run which is equally important.

Here's a What to look for when picking and reviewing monitors.

Can expand on any of these points if required, but some more food for thought for now.

Monitors are same as most things in that "You generally get what you pay for"
