Instead of Rudd lobbying the Pope to make somebody a saint, he should lobby the Pope to buy shares in Ansell.

If he did own shares in Ansell what's the bet the Pope would change his view on using condoms and start telling the masses to use them but only Ansell ones:

reading the wikipedia article on the vatican and the history of the popes is very interesting. Makes you wonder how the vatican can survive for so long. I reckon if they dont change some of their attitude very soon they will soon face extinction, already a lot of young people do not accept the concept of the pope as god's representative on earth.

On the other hand having someone on Earth who can make up the rules and interpret the books might keep them relevant. It's those dogmatically following the books to the letter that will become irrelevant once there are answers for everything and global morals develop, collide and become consistant.

There is a great deal in what you say, but works of art etc., are worth a debate. A painting that was given to me as a present sometime ago is still probably worth very little. However, if I was told it's now worth $10 million then I'm still not selling. That must be the case with items in the Vatican.

On sales of many paintings and other works of art the value has much to do with very little being available. So if they sold loads to give away then it would plummet in price

A valid point but no one is saying the Vatican has to have a fire sale on its art work The value of its collection of paintings, alone, must be truly astonishing. im sure they have a few Picasso's, Van Goth's and Cezanne's tucked away. So why do they keep choosing geriatrics who have one foot in the grave? Why not a youthful (45-50) 'relevant' pope for these modern times?

I hear that the vatican owns Yankee Stadium and they also own a lot of very valuable real estate around the world. In fact if the Vatican is a REIT it would be the biggest REIT in the world!!!

No one outside the vatican knows it's real worth, only thing we know is the vatican use to be the bankers to royalty and held immense power over kings and monarchs.

Yes, there has been a lot of negative publicity concerning Christianity particularly the links with pedophilia etc, but this thread to me seems a little harsh considering there are many thousands of selfless Christians who work in charities etc to help the unfortunate. Attacking their spiritual leader is basically the same as attacking them.

I would say, most people here, including myself, fall into the category of greedy and rarely sacrifice their time to the needy? I don't see us being any different from whats being proclaimed - we all like money.

It would be ironic when we die, we find ourselves standing at the pearly gates - what a surprise that would be!!

$70 mil tax break from New York State plus providing bonds totalling 225 mil + tax payers will not charge tax on thses bonds totalling 7.5mil a year. I hope tax payers are happy with that!

I think you are confusing the issue here. No one is talking about the average charitable christian.

The pope as CEO of one of the worlds largest businesses has the power to be as charitable as any Bill Gates or Ted Turner.
