Joe - it appears your site here is exploding with popularity - its a hard job to keep my favorite threads on the front page - the ASX stock chat needs some re-arranging, whether it be a-k & l-z, or some other method.....pls help.

congratulations on its success by the way.

Rest assured baglimit, Joe has his eye on all types of improvements so prepare to be surprised......and before you ask, you can't 'buy' a sticky thread for your favourite stock but obviously people like Chicken know of free ways to create virtual sticky's....(I hear Chicken say "Whatever...")

I'd like to see it go the way of Sharescene and to have a dedicated thread for each company and to have the ASX Stock Chat section locked so Mods can only make new topics.

Emm, that's an interesting idea, maybe a new thread in the stock area can go in a moderator queue til we ok it....prevents duplication, but it hasn't been a big problem so far, maybe if we have a greater emphasis on using the search facility for new members and following the posting guidelines (maybe via an email on registration) then people will be more likely to be careful.

I like the idea of having only one topic per code yet the threads to still shuffle to the top if they have a recent post... annoys me sometimes when someone starts a new thread on one i've already been spruiking :)

I think the share tipping comp is a great growth maker for the site. great stuff..

I don't really see the need to lock anything at the moment. If there were lots of problems then maybe although I would personally rather see a system where troublesome posts / duplicate topics are referred to mods to be combined with an existing thread, moved to the correct forum or whatever rather than prevent anyone from starting a new topic.

Regarding duplicate threads in general, I think there's an argument that if a thread on a particular stock has been inactive for a long period or the issues surrounding that company have greatly changed (for example a small mineral explorer becomes a substantial producer with it's own processing plants etc) then the old posts aren't really relevant to present discussion so continuing a 5 year old 50 page thread doesn't make a lot of sense to me under that circumstance. In that case two threads for the same stock would make some sense although I can see the counter argument too. :2twocents

you can always do a code search on the top

but i like it the way it is :)

Btw any chances of a takeover/merger with sharescene or sharesguru? hotcopper even?

Yes, this place is starting to get a little busy, isn't it? :D

I'm working on a minor restructuring of the forums at the moment to keep everything organised and easy to find. Even though I have a policy of keeping all general discussion on each stock to the one thread I am reluctant to lock the forums down and take a hard line on this particular approach. I think there is a place for the odd 'XXX stock versus XXXX stock' thread or threads discussing a very specific aspect of a company. There is room for some flexibilty I feel.

However, I do think we need to have some kind of standardisation of format on the titles of general threads on particular stocks, so they can be found easier using the search function. This is something I will be working on after I introduce the new forum structure in a couple of weeks.

Of course, I will be asking for input from ASF members before making any final decisions.

So stay tuned for some minor changes.... :)

can an enhancement include the option to do multiple searches at once, maybe on stock codes of interest - eg. 'fre ceo nms'

this is a very specific example, especially to me - oh yeah u know that !!

Out of interest how long has this board been around?

finally, my two cents. At some stage before it grows too large my experience says it would pay off to hav the nav like some have suggested above. Obviously you wouldn't want to copy say, sharescene but something along those lines would imo be advantageous!

Will see what I can do SOB... the forums are also due for a software upgrade in the next few months or thereabouts... maybe the new version of this software may have an improved search function. I will be looking into it very soon. :)

powwww: ASF has been around for approximately a year and a half now... members first started coming on board in June 2004.

hey I've always wondered what motivates someone to set up or moderate a forum like this one. Don't take it the wrong way because I'm just interested - its a massive time investment that I respect but do ppl on sharescene, hot copper and so on get paid or how do they keep the board up and running and what motivates someone like you Joe, to run this so professionaly?

All the adoring fans? groupies? what? :)

ASF kind of happened by accident. It started out as a personal challenge... an exercise in community building more than anything else. The reason it became a stock forum is because of my personal interest in the stockmarket and investing. Had I had been more interested in Golf for example, there's every chance this site could be Aussie Golf Forums. :D

I have been a participant in many forums in the past and have always marvelled at the ability of some to create friendly, cohesive online communities. About a year and a half ago I decided I would have a go myself... ASF is the result. I can't say I imagined it would get this big this quickly but it has... and I must say I'm enjoying the ride. Hope everyone else is enjoying it too. :)

Groupies? I wish! :D
