Who do you "worship" ?

I can't believe that I am alone in a world of hero worshippers, I can't think of anyone that I would put a tag on that says "My Hero"

Sure, I am pleased that there are people who are out there to entertain us, be it people who can sing well, play a good tune on a musical instrument, athletic enough to be part of a sporting team but it all seems backward to me. Why are these people top of the tree? (at least to some people)

How has it gone from, doing what you are good at to earn enough to buy lunch to, just turning up for an appearance to earn more than the GDP of many small countries?

I must be in some sort of denial but I can't help being a little distraught with the way rock stars, pop stars, sporting stars, religious personalities, royalty, political heavyweights, super wealthy, pr0n stars, media personalities and others have such an influence on such a large number of people?

My dad was not a hero worshipper either - he would always say that everyone looks the same perched upon the toilet doing number 2's

.... funny thing - he was a plumber, so he should know....., that reminds me of a humurous story he once told me. A well known personality with a blocked toilet needed the earthenware pipes dug up in the back yard for clearing. The "well known personality" came out to inspect the unclearing and made a big fuss of how bad it smelled, my dad just looked up out of the trench and said "how do you think I feel? - it's your sh*t"

Most of the people you mentioned are like a reference point. The best at what they do. A being can measure their own ability against these reference points so in order to be 'perceived' by others as 'like' the top performers then a close study must be undertaken. The fan is born.

I've never understand the fan mentality either. I can't think of anyone that I would consider my hero.

I also can't understand why girls have to scream when they see their favourite star, musician etc. What is with that!!

Im not into hero worship - but I admire Steve Waugh for pushing the boundaries, his mental strength, never say die attitude, and coolness under pressure.

Interesting thread. I don't "worship" anyone, and worry about the state of the world when (for example) Paris Hilton's dog gains more media coverage than "real" newsworthy events. I think there are several musicians, sportspeople, artists etc that are certainly deserving of respect and admiration for the determination, character and talent they've shown in reaching their level of celebrity -but there are just as many people serving their communities, contributing to scientific discoveries, working for the improvement of human rights, animal rights, child safety etc, that go completely unrecognised or acknowledged by the vast majority of the population - let alone worshipped. It's a sad state of affairs when Tiger Woods' indiscretions gain far more media coverage than events that affect people's actual lives.

Doesn't everybody grow out of this when they reach adulthood? Particularly when they realise that everybody has faults and is not perfect.

thinking about following kevin rudd, has a few angles, you can go to strip clubs, and it not be a problem at all, unlike sarkozy.. also he only sleeps two hours a night like me atm..

Once the illusion is realised (never going to be like them) then yes the idolisation falls away as one becomes more aligned with self.

I prefer the old fashioned definition of "hero" as a "person noted for courage or nobility of purpose."

There was an incident some months ago where a baby in a pram rolled off the platform in front of a train. A young man jumped down on the tracks after the train had stopped, and retrieved the baby from the mangled pram and returned it to it's mother.

The lad was lauded as a "hero" by the media, just for being helpful. There was no courage or nobility of purpose involved. He was doing what any well brought up young man or woman would do, i.e. the right thing.

Yep. I can remember in my teens passionately admiring Elizabeth Taylor and dyeing my hair black so I would look like her. Sadly, it didn't work.

It's probably all part of finding the self or something.

We also imitate and want to be just like our parents when toddlers.

When I was a kid it was Aussie cricketers.

As a teen it was John Lennon.

By the time I was 20 there was none.

Hero worship?
I dont actually feel that there is a Hero worship per say eg. Tiger Woods, Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor.
It doesn't matter who but if you lose the respect you lose the hero status.
Thats why we have the true hero in Jesus. Amen

I think its an emotional maturity stage, in searching for an identity......

Kids and teens go through it and the odd lost adult (or someone who is just unique and dares to do as they please) stays in it, but i do have heros....

My heros are the people who tirelessly make this world a better place eveyday with little to no recognition at all.....those people who volunteer to answer help line calls, volunteer firefighters, SES, childrens sports coaches, foster parents, etc etc , they are the real heros of this world......

The pop icons and actors are just iconic images of popular culture.....their obscene paychecks and lifestyles are indicative of thier ability / marketability in an incredibly competitive and fickle industry.......

If you where relatively as good as they are at share trading or investing, you would be commanding pay checks and bonuses that make theres seem tiny.....

I wouldnt have there world of living in the spotlight, beinbg judged and recorded every moment........its worth the dollars the get......cause it robs them of the ability to live....

Glory to the everyday heros.....they are the real ones.....
