Health, Diabetes and a Soda Tax

the only solution is to get people moving.

And how do you propose to do that ? Reintroduce conscription ?

The idea that there is one "only solution" is ridiculous.

A combination of measures will achieve the best result because if your "only solution" doesn't work then we have got nowhere.

To combat skin cancer we did the 'Slip, Slop , Slap" campaign, it was based around educating people about the health risks or certain activities, and it did really change a lot of peoples behaviour. I think a similar education program is really all that's going to help, Taxing food won't.

Thanks for the nice girly pics but education campaigns cost money. How do you intend financing them ?

I remind you of the "Life, be in it" campaign. Remember Norm ? Why are we still talking about obesity if that campaign was a success ?

What is your evidence that increasing the price of unhealthy food wont reduce the consumption of it ?

Interesting that about 10 seconds through your promo of Slip slop slap it said "our attitudes are changing but not fast enough", which indicates that education campaigns take a long time to work if they do at all, and that they are just another excuse to give money to corporations (advertising agencies) when we should be penalising those corporations that make us unhealthy.

Speaking of enjoying oneself, many years ago I used to put sugar in tea and coffee and salt on my meals, but decided to give them up.

I can now actually taste the tea, coffee and food instead of the sugar and salt.

Worth a try.

I too (and have teeth to prove it) love sugar, but having given it the general flick to avoid serious illness as I age, these days I get a sugar hangover headache in the morning.....obviously it was the sugar all those years ago and not the alcohol !!!:D

Neither do I, especially if they just switch to some other drink and don't change their total calorie in take or their exercise habits.

Not to mention a lot of over weight people have other health issues, eg depression etc that is the real cause behind them choosing to sit inside on the couch all day and use food as release.

Yea like switching from real coke to coke zero. Want to get fat or get cancer?

I miss luutzu posting though he does pop in to look ocassionly. Like his wit.

My health tends to vary due to lifelong asthma but as a result feel fantastic at present as finally over a cold. Exercise is the most important thing.
Important to be muscle for bone strength and fit for heart and brain health.

Just watched Dr Michael Mosley on SBS. It was the first episode of his Health Revolution series.

Short story is that Type 2 Diabetes is a purely dietary human caused illness that affects 1M people in Australia and kills 15,000 of them every year.o_Oo_O (Makes COVID look like a walk in the park doesn't it ? ) Dr Mosley has proven that Type 2 Diabetes can be reversed simply through weight loss and a healthy diet. On the other hand the current medical establishment doesn't recognise this possibility. The current advice is a proper diet and medication.

I went on Dr Mosleys fast 800 diet a couple of years ago and lost 8 kilos. Excellent food. Worked well. But that was two years ago.:( Not so good looking now.

Dr Mosley is doing a few things in this series.
1) He is deliberately going on a typical Aussie diet to see what happens. (It's not good.) He then intends to reverse the effects
2) He is working with some extremely obese and long term diabetic people. They will go on his diets and we will see the results. The majority of these people are indigenous.

There is only one episode to air at the moment. Absolutely sets the scene. Really worth checking out and for me at least resolving to take some action to reverse the dangerous trends of COVID lockdown.

I have not read the old posts but OS there have been quite a few studies and trials, they usually show that a healthy diet does manage Diabetes 2 quite well.

One of my wife's old workmates has been doing that for 5 years

Just watched the second episode of Dr Mosleys Australian Health Revolution program.

Have to say I was blown away. I "knew" that this experiment was going to work. They simply wouldn't put it to air if it became an abject failure. But having said that when I saw the 8 people who were going to be the participants I really wondered just how was this going to work ?

Episode 2 sees week one and two of the 8 week program. At the end of week one people have lost 5-6-7 kilos. They are already noticing a significant improvement in their health . By week two a couple of participants are going off their insulin and high blood pressure medication. The meals are mouth watering.

If you have friends or family who have Type 2 Diabetes or are carrying too much weight this program is very encouraging.

It is a revolutionary program. If this seriously caught on it would bankrupt the fast food industry, critically undermine the snack and processed food suppliers and put a serious dent in Big Pharmas profits. I could see Australia's GDP going into reverse with the loss of sales.
Be interested to hear others thoughts after seeing the first two episodes.

I did his fast 800 diet. My weight had crept up to 100kgs, my ideal is about 84kg .
Lost the weight in 4 weeks. All scientific. Weight Watchers would also go out of business.

I'm up at 95 kg since last year as it's easier to spar with my son who is a similar size. My ideal fighting weight is actually 75 kg. And if I were serious best power to weight is 69kg.
I went through an intensive training program while I was putting the weight on. But there is still a lot of fat.

You do notice the health negatives. For me it's sleep related. Snoring my head off and waking up feeling like I was run over by a bus. Constantly lethargic and its a real push to keep on schedule. I can see how people balloon out due to bad sleeping habits and extra calories. I delayed cutting my weight strictly due to laziness.

The weird thing is that being this weight seems to be more accepted and attract more attention then being thinner.
It's a weird world.

I better cut back to 85kg before I go to 120kg

I know people criticise the BMI model but IMO it really is about BMI unless you're a bodybuilder or such. Even as a lockdown W@H sloth it's simple for me to stay within healthy BMI range just by consuming appropriate calories, and no more.

When I know I can only eat/drink a certain amount of energy in a day I (often) naturally prefer things with a better nutrient profile and lower GI, as these leave me less hungry. I think many people are like that.

In practice, it's not exactly a daily thing. If you know you've overindulged one day you know you must eat less the next.

My daughter is a dietician deals with weight loss amongst many other things (treating diarrheal through to getting women pregnant etc), the one thing that surprised me is people who see her generally end up eating more than before when they putting the weight on, the change is just to healthy eating.

Wasn't there a natural body builder on the forum many years ago?
Gav or something
