Is it possible for the mental health authorities to actually come to your house and take you away on suspicion of mental ilness? have just listened to two stories on the radio about the issue. It sounded like the authorities had the power to just take you away without explanation.

Does anyone know anything about "being scheduled" as they seem to call it?

Yep.

More powers than police in most places.

Sectioned, put on papers, committed, whatever you want to call it.

Yes, you can be involuntarily admitted. However, there are a number of criteria which must be met.

In general, the person must be
1. A mentally ill or
2. A mentally disordered person

and because of this there is the potential for serious harm to
1. The individual or
2. Other members of the public

and
1. The person is unable to give consent for treatment

and
1. The person cannot receive adequate treatment in a less restrictive manner

These criteria are generally the same across all states and territories. Also, there is some requirement to inform the person of their legal rights etc. In addition, there appears to be a national guideline and international UN principles which cover this issue.
