Hi all,

I have what seems to be the stupidest question ever.

Where do I find the shares to buy? I'm looking at the asx website, and have found a few different companies that I've looked at.. .But where do I find more? And where can I go to sort them by dividend return or by P/E? (for example...)

I haven't yet set up a trading account but I'm going with CMC Markets (Maybe). Anyone got a better recommendation for a newbie? Is this where I would be able to sort & search the entire stock exchange?

Thanks for any help!

You buy them through your broker (CMC, Bell, etrade etc.), who also give you fundamental data to sort through if you want.

Where would people be without my expertise, I ask you?

Welcome. You could start by reading the Newbie thread in the beginner section. It'll take a few days, but people tell me it's worth it. As for your question if you just want to dive in...

http://www.afr.com.au/share_tables/

This is a link that will allow you to download various ASX stock codes and will give you Div yield and P/E ratios however one of the things you will learn is that free information is generally not the highest quality data so treat the information here with caution.

As to your question on CMC - I don't use them so I can't comment on how good or not good they are as a broker but I would like to ask do you know why you are putting money into the market? Are you speculating, investing, system trading, discretionary trading, equities trading, derivative trading, FX trading, Contracts for Difference trading, Options trading, Swing trading?

<- Get the idea? Education is usually a good starting point before you put real dollars on the line. I would encourage you to use these forums and find mentors that can help you on your journey.

Cheers

Please tell us you are not going to jump straight into CFD's or any other form of derivative.

Agree with reading the beginner threads in ASF.

Broker - as a beginner, I'd recommend you start with the market leader. Brokers have research and data, and you can set up a paper trading portfolio and see how you go -before you put any of your hard earned on the line. Don't be impatient.

Also there's a lot of good information on the ASX site - asx.com.au

No, definitely not. I'm scared of lending (for the moment...) after a pretty sour experience with property.

So.... who is the market leader? :)

Ummmmm to make money? hopefully?
not doing CFDs, FX trading, options at this stage... I think speculating and investing? I want to do a mix of short (1-3 months) and long term strategies.

But I'm still in the research stage - very much so!

I've got a watchlist on the asx website which has done pretty well so far, but I want to know what all the bits mean before I put my cash before any decisions.

Thanks for all your help

... I want to know what all the bits mean ...

The bit you put in ... that is seed capital,

the bit you get out (over and above seed capital) is gross profit,

the bit you put back in, ... that would be re-investment.

Sorry I couldn't help myself! :D

I could go on ...
