Our present GG has gotten herself in to some "snout in yucca" trouble.

Poor ole Wayne Swan, has had to discipline her, he gets all the enjoyable jobs.

Her spending on flowers between Sept 2008 and Dec 2010 was $110,000

Revelations of Ms Bryce's expenditure follow recent reports that war veterans complained after being invited to her official residence that tea would be served but no biscuits or sandwiches, because of budget restrictions.

Florists who have worked at Government House in Canberra told The Sunday Telegraph it had a refrigerated flower room.

When Ms Bryce swore in Prime Minister Julia Gillard, she decorated the tables of Government House with arrangements of purple sweet peas and yellow roses, white orchids and ranunculus.

I know what a veteran is, but what is a ranunculus?

A ranunculus is a very pretty flower which comes in a rainbow of colours and lasts well in a vase, a feature undoubtedly important to the governor general.

The poor dear. She is copping all this criticism when apparently she is actually spending less on flowers than did her predecessor and he was a bloke, fergawdsake!

Ms Bryce seems destined to sink into posterity notable chiefly for her capacity to spend taxpayer dollars. It's not just the flowers, but her bills for overseas travel and accommodation are ******* unbelievable.

Imo the office of governor general should be abolished. We have far too many meaningless titles/positions in this country.

Thanks for the botanical advice. My present input in to carbon emissions is when the present Mrs Gumnut decides to move a tree 1 metre eastwards, and I duly set about the task, removing said tree, diggin a new hole etc.etc.

She is a spendthrift, our GG.

I must admit I can't stand the current GG. I listened to her speech on radio this morning regarding the role of women and every phrase she uttered would be apt for inclusion on the "speech pepperisms that bug you" thread.

GG as a student of Latin you should know that ranunculus means "little frog". Actually it's a buttercup. I guess there was only one buttercup in the arrangement, or the article would have said "ranunculeses" although some prefer the less cumbersome "ranunculi" as a plural.

The say " a rose by any other name would smell as sweet" but I think in would take more than 110 thousand bucks worth of flowers to sweeten up the visage of the old "stick insect".
