I have been waiting for something like this to happen.
http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/latest/5506833/tourists-die-fraser-island-crash/
Fraser is my regular home away from home, so far this year have spend 3 breaks up there away from the world. But they really need to police this area. Yes there is a part time police station there manned during peak periods but backpackers often with no 4x4 experience hire troop carriers cram in a dozen people with all there gear and drive like maniacs on the beach and tracks.
I was there before easter and saw one group driving with one of the backpackers (Female) sitting in the back walkway topless with her boobs pressed against the window. I didnt really look that much cos i had my missus and kids and dragon in law in the car with me. But to another group that passed me and tailgated the vehicle was an accident waiting to happen.
The reason why they cram so many people in these 4x4 is that they charge $500 a day to hire so to save money they get together and pack in like sardines.
The speed limit on the beach is 80 kph but often you see idiots driving faster along a beach with wash outs that are up to 12 inches deep. Add to this groups of backpackers playing soccer right where vehicles drive I have been hit a number of times by soccer balls kicked by players annoyed that you interupt their game. Luckily I slow down where people are as it isnt uncommon for children to run out from behind dunes accross your path to the water.
To get to the point we should have a greater police presence on fraser given that 75mile beach is gazetted as a major highway. I have only seen poice there over the easter 4 days and over the Xmas /new yr period and that is mainly for Breathalizer and radar traps.
