Female for "Mate"?

So maybe the answer is to ban the word mate altogether from asf.

I have been on a number of occasions been corrected by females for calling them mate.

It reminds me of a joke.

The worker is hauled in front of the boss for calling the foreman a bastard.
The boss says to the worker "did you call him a bastard?"
The worker says "I never called him a bastard, the bastard."

So maybe there should be infractions for calling a mate, mate.

Instead of mate

How about meat, as in sweet meat

Don't think that'll go down well with the fair ones !!! but same letters different meaning :)

Ok
Friends, ASFers, countrymen and countrywomen,
Lend me your ears.
Can we agree that on this forum whether one is male or female, that it is ok to address each other as
mate.

I agree , it might also close the gap of understanding between men and women in this country when they understand what mateship is all about.

I crings when I hear a copper call an offender mate, insist on Sir or Maam and give'm a punch in the guts if they're cheeky.

On the whole 'mate' seems to be used in a tone of liking someone, or even affection. So in that sense, it shouldn't be offensive. Probably it's just part of the Australian idiom.

It also depends on the context. I don't expect the check out operator to call me 'mate'.

I get a lot of milage out of "sweetheart" and "toots". I've copyrighted the latter so don't go riding my coat tails!
