I can tell this is going to feel a bit like a "dear doctor" sort of entry. Sorry in advance.

I am currently thinking/trying to get into investment/trading for a living. I'm 25yo graduated with a Bachelor of Science in a health related field (4yr FT course).

I don't know what the job title might be called, and i really don't care, but what I am trying to do is learn as much as I can about trading/investing in a real world situation, and earn a little money on the way.

I want to try and get a job without having to complete any new qualifications at the moment (but will if i have to). I had an aptitude for maths and physics at school and when working managed to make it to a senior role within 2 years of graduating. From what I can tell my best chance is to try and get into back offices, junior positions, or clerk positions in some of the mid to large firms. Can any one fill me in on what these sort of duties these positions entail? I think once in a position I will be fine as I can normally adapt pretty quickly, and I think it will also give me the exposure I need to identify what sort of role/s I might want to aim for in the future.

I am currently in London so have a few more companies to apply to than back home at Perth. Has any one entered the field in this way, can they make any recommendations or suggestions?

I have only a small personal portfolio of small cap Aus miners, so haven't followed the wider global economics as much as I should have. But have been successful in the 1 yr trading experience that i've had. I am not really fussed about the pay etc as am trying to change field because i like the challenge and excitement of trading/investing.

Any suggestions, recommendations, ideas appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Skegsi

Investment/trading covers a broad general field, but you could start as a researcher in your field of science, for example, for a broker, investment adviser, newspaper, magazine, TV program etc.

If you found you really enjoyed the business aspect more than science, I would do an MBA rather than a B.bus. That would cement your business credentials onto your science and open a lot more doors later.

It seems right now, everyone wants a quant - in which case, maths would be the way to go.

Good luck

You need very simple maths to be successful investor.. :)

I did double advance maths, calculus and stuff in College but never use it
and forgot it all by now.

All I use now is Addition and subtraction :), compound interest calculation Discount Cash Flow and a quick rule of 72 :).

Investing and trading are two different things. Trading you open and hold a position in very short time frame where as investing you want to buy something that will eventually paid you dividends and capital growth over the years.

for me it's patient, believe in my own research and conviction and have the courage to go against the herds if I exhaust my research and very sure I'm correct. If I do make a mistake which I no doubt did over the year, I cop it in the chin and admit that I made a mistake and get out before I get into further trouble.

Cheers and good luck
