Elon Musk and convicted felon Donald Trump have been in contact several times a month since their private meeting in March at the home of billionaire investor Nelson Peltz, according to The Wall Street Journal. They’re discussing an advisory role for Musk if Trump wins back the White House in November — potentially giving Musk influence over economic policy.
How Musk treats his employees
Consider Trump’s MO of treating underlings like dung. In 2022, Musk fired half of Twitter’s 7,500 employees, including teams devoted to combating election misinformation — and did it so haphazardly and arbitrarily that most had no idea they were fired until their email accounts were shut off.
This was after Musk fired Twitter’s executives “with cause” to avoid paying them the golden parachutes they were owed. And after he taunted Twitter and the law firm it worked with in its lawsuit against him, suggesting he would sue all of them.
Musk’s concern about the dwindling number of people seeing his tweets prompted him to convene a group of engineers to discover why his engagement numbers were tanking. When one of the company’s two remaining principal engineers explained it was likely due to waning public interest in Musk’s antics, Musk fired the engineer.
A few weeks ago, Musk laid off 14,000 Tesla workers. They discovered they no longer had jobs only when their keys to the parking lot no longer worked. In order to receive severance, they had to agree not to participate in any lawsuit or mass arbitration against the company or publicly defame Tesla.

What Apple’s deal with ChatGPT AI means for iPhone data privacy
The world’s richest man has threatened to ban iPhones at his companies, claiming the devices could lead to major privacy breaches.
Elon Musk made a slew of remarks at Apple overnight after the company announced an overhaul of its AI capabilities, a move the Tesla boss has described as “patently absurd”.
It arrived as Apple, at its World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC), announced a raft of new AI features, some of which work in conjunction with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Those new features, which fall under the banner “Apple Intelligence”, include a major upgrade of the company’s 14-year-old voice assistant Siri, which would now be able to mine through mobile apps to “meaningfully help complete an array of tasks”.
What is Apple AI (Apple Intelligence)?
Apple Intelligence is Apple’s first major move in the AI space which will have the company now competing with some of the world’s largest companies as it looks to stake its place in the consumer AI space.
Apple devices will now be able to read personal information to find specific photographs of family members or friends, assess traffic and proofread texts.

Users will also be able to generate images and emojis – pictograms used in text messaging to show emotion – on demand with AI.
All these moves will significantly improve the way Apple users go about their day-to-day life, said Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook.
“We think Apple Intelligence is going to be indispensable to the products that already play such an integral role in our lives,” he said in a presentation.
Is Apple partnering with OpenAI?
Apple Intelligence was built in-house by the company to use “generative models with personal context to deliver intelligence”.
But Apple has also joined a growing list of companies which have decided that partnering with other AI developers is far more efficient.
If a user’s request is too complex for Siri and Apple Intelligence, she will provide the user with the option to ask ChatGPT instead.

Apple has integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT, allowing access to certain features and parts of the company’s operating system including writing.
ChatGPT can be used to generate other forms of content. In the compose feature, ChatGPT can generate text for different occasions, as well as images to “complement” the text it has generated.
Will my iPhone data be safe?
While a lot of Apple Intelligence features will be performed on-device, ChatGPT queries will filter through OpenAI’s servers.
Apple has said that no user information would be shared with OpenAI, and that the company would not be able to identify queries from specific Apple users.
The company said that devices would always seek a user’s approval before any questions, documents or images are shared with ChatGPT.

“Privacy protections are built in for users who access ChatGPT — their IP addresses are obscured, and OpenAI won’t store requests. ChatGPT’s data-use policies apply for users who choose to connect their account,” Apple said.
One of the main goals for the integration was so that users could access ChatGPT’s “expertise” without “needing to jump between tools”.
Which devices will be affected by Apple AI?
Musk has made some major claims overnight, describing Apple’s partnership with OpenAI as “patently absurd”.
“It’s patently absurd that Apple isn’t smart enough to make their own AI, yet is somehow capable of ensuring that OpenAI will protect your security & privacy!” he wrote on his social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
Musk has also claimed that Apple would have no ability to control data from its device users once it has been accessed by Open AI.
“Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI. They’re selling you down the river,” he said.
Has Musk banned Apple?
Musk has threatened to ban his employees from using Apple devices. He has also threatened to ban visitors from bringing Apple-made products inside.
“If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. That is an unacceptable security violation,” he wrote on X.
“And visitors will have to check their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage.”
Will this affect other Apple devices like the Apple Watch and iPad?
Apple has reserved its new AI features for its premium devices, making them available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPad and Mac with the M1 chip or later.
The features will become available as part of a beta trial with iOS18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia later this year.

Elon Musk says he will move X and SpaceX headquarters out of California
Elon Musk is fed up with California.
The billionaire entrepreneur said he is moving the headquarters of two of his companies, X Corp. and SpaceX, to Texas from California. His disclosures, on X, came after California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, signed a new law Monday aiming to prevent schools from informing families if their children identify as gay or transgender.
“This is the final straw,” Musk wrote on X, the social-media platform he owns. He cited the law as well as “many others that preceded it, attacking both families and companies.” The California law prohibits school districts from requiring employees to disclose information about a student’s sexual orientation or gender identity without the student’s consent. Proponents of the law say it protects children from being forced into being outed and creates a safe place for them in school. Critics say it infringes on the rights of parents to be informed.
Musk said his rocket company, SpaceX, would move its headquarters from Hawthorne, Calif., to Texas, where SpaceX has been expanding its Starbase manufacturing and launch site near Brownsville, in the southeast corner of the state.
He said X, the social-media platform, would move its headquarters from San Francisco to Austin, Texas.
“Have had enough of dodging gangs of violent drug addicts just to get in and out of the building,” he said about X’s current digs in San Francisco.
Representatives for SpaceX and Newsom didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. An X spokesman declined to comment.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, reposted one of Musk’s posts on X and said that the SpaceX move “cements Texas as the leader in space exploration.” The disclosures come after Musk on Saturday formally threw his support behind Donald Trump shortly after the assassination attempt, endorsing him for president in the coming US election. The Wall Street Journal on Monday reported that Musk has said he plans to commit around $US45m ($66.6m) a month to a new super political-action committee backing Trump’s presidential run, citing people familiar with the matter.
Musk’s social-media company, X, previously known as Twitter, has been based in the Mid-Market neighbourhood of San Francisco for more than a decade — long before Musk acquired the company in 2022.
Musk has criticised how San Francisco leaders have responded to problems such as crime. “Many Twitter employees feel unsafe coming to work in downtown SF and have had their car windows smashed,” Musk posted on X last year. “They also got such a null response from the police that they rarely even bother reporting crimes anymore, because nothing happens.” X has been expanding in Texas. Earlier this year, the company said it was hiring employees for a team based in Austin to focus on content safety issues.
It isn’t immediately clear what will happen to X’s headquarters complex in San Francisco. X could keep a presence in the area. That could lead to a setup similar to the one at Musk’s electric-vehicle company, Tesla, which is based in Texas but has an office called its “engineering headquarters” in Palo Alto, Calif.
Before Musk’s announcement Tuesday, X was making plans to sublease excess space that it was no longer using at its headquarters in San Francisco following staff reductions, people familiar with the plans said last week.

As for SpaceX, the rocket company has long had a footprint in Texas, and has been taking steps to increase its presence there. The company has filed paperwork to reincorporate in Texas, from Delaware, where a judge earlier this year ruled against Musk’s pay package at Tesla.
In McGregor, a city located near Waco, SpaceX tests engines and other hardware. Outside of Austin, it opened a new factory spanning more than 700,000 square feet to produce Starlink user terminals. Along a Gulf of Mexico beach not far from Brownsville, the company has been pouring resources into what it calls Starbase.
Starbase, soon to be SpaceX’s headquarters, sprawls over several parcels of land near tidal flats and parks. The company said in 2023 it directly employed more than 1,800 people at Starbase, making it the largest employer in the area.
The complex, which SpaceX has called the “Gateway to Mars,” includes a launch pad for the company’s Starship rocket, a factory, housing and other facilities tied to the huge vehicle, which SpaceX is still trying to demonstrate can fly as designed.
More activity is expected at Starbase. Earlier this year, the company said it planned to develop a five-story office as an addition to its factory there, according to a filing from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. It recently asked federal aviation officials for permission to launch Starship up to 25 times a year from Starbase, up from the five launches annually it currently has permission to operate.
SpaceX has won support from many members of the communities where it operates in Texas, but has generated pushback and frustration, too. More than a year ago, dozens of residents of Bastrop County took issue with SpaceX’s Starlink factory and expansion plans from Musk’s Boring Company, a tunnelling firm.
SpaceX, meanwhile, frequently closes down the beach adjacent to Starbase for Starship operations, and some environmentalists and residents say regulators haven’t done enough to mitigate the effect the operations are having on land and wildlife. The company has said it is proud to be an active part of the community near Starbase, touting its work in the region.
Shifting headquarters to Starbase from Hawthorne, Calif., marks at least a symbolic end of an era for the company. SpaceX, founded by Musk more than two decades ago, grew up in Southern California.
It occupies a large factory complex in Hawthorne, a city just southeast of Los Angeles International Airport, and has a significant workforce there. A towering SpaceX booster sits near one entrance of the building.
