Does SMS speak get on your nerves?

I notice that quite a few, primarily younger, members of this forum tend to compose their posts in some kind of bizarre SMS dialect.

A sentence like:

It will be interesting to see how this stock fares tomorrow.

I often find it quite difficult to decipher and was wondering if others out there are finding it a struggle as well?

I have a feeling this strange phenomenon is lowering literacy standards amongst this country's youth as proper spelling and grammar go out the window. :eek:

Would be interested in your thoughts.

Doesn't actually bother me too much, and I can usually decipher the meaning.
But I do absolutely agree with your point that it is contributing to the already sad state of literacy which presently prevails.

To the people who do engage in this sort of communication: why do you do it? Is it now just a habit for you or is it the easy way out because of some uncertainties re grammar and/or spelling, or is it just laziness or perhaps what you would describe as "efficient time management"?

I'm not getting at you here: just genuinely curious about why you appear to be so devoted to using this form of communication.

No, seriously even as a twenty something, I get confused with some of the abbreviations and non capitalised emails, chat
However I must admit I also do it because it saves time in a lot of situations
 
I'm sure the youngsters use it on their phones because if they go over a certain amount of 'characters' in a message it is charged as 2 messages.

It's probably changed my psyche somewhat!!

I certainly agree though that it is sad that the kids think of this as 'normal'

SMS speak really gets on my nerves although I do use it when texting! I have already asked on fellow poster not to use it!

(by the way ROFL is rolling on floor laughing and LMAO is laughing my a$%e off)
 
Personally I find the whole concept of texting on mobile phones a bit pointless to start with. OK, it's useful to send a text saying "Bloggs motors here. Car is ready to collect. $150. We close at 6PM." etc but when it comes to actual conversations, why not just use the phone? An awful lot quicker and easier and much less chance of being misunderstood.

Personally I think that with the exception of those normally used on internet forums (eg IMO, LOL etc) and those relating directly to the subject at hand I'd rather not have it on ASF as it does make the posts harder to read, especially for those new to the forum. The general shortening of words isn't helpful as far as I'm concerned.

As for the overall standard of English these days, it's like most other areas of knowledge IMO. Nobody wants to accept that you simply know something or are an expert on it. It's always "where does it say that" or "give me a link to prove it". Bottom line is that anyone who knows what they're on about won't know "where it says that" because they didn't need to look it up in the first place. They actually know it themselves. It's a sad reflection on education that so many seem to have trouble with the concept of people actually having their own knowledge.

That said, I've given in at work and will now accept that "half 10" means it's 10:30 AM and that anything more than about 5 years old is "old skool". Suffice to say that I've done a deal with the "offenders" that I'll live with it as long as it's not used in any formal communications. And I'm getting used to hearing a car crash every time one of the apprentices gets a call on his mobile. Only problem is that by the time I get used to it, he gets a new phone or at least a new ring tone so I'll probably be hearing gun shots or something before long. Whatever happened to phones just ringing? I Have to admit that the audio and image quality on his new phone is pretty impressive though. The speakers are too close together for proper stereo sound however.

SMS speak does get on my nerves especially when you are talking to someone you do not know through email. Also something that really ticks me off when you send a detailed email to a business asking a few questions or they give you a single "yes" or "no" reply that REALLY get on my nerves.
You just sit there going yes? Which one of my 4 questions is that supposed to be the answer for grrrr... :swear:
 
Or even worse the business doesn't reply at all or takes days to actually answer the question. Or they just refer you to some phone number or external website...

yes, they are numbing society....
 
I hate text messages all over, not so much for their abbreviation, but just the amount of time they take and their pointlessness (it takes 4 msgs each to actually comunicate anything or discuss it). It takes me 3 mins to write what I can say in 10secs, I feel like bloody Stephen Hawking...

Unless you are on a horribly expensive plan (i.e. Telstra!) don't do it!

The worrying bit is that I did manage to read that in only about twice the time it would have taken to read the full version. Better stop now or I'll be good at reading txt before long and then will have no remaining excuses to avoid it... :D :D
 
I dun hav a problm wif peeps who use sms speak. depending on if im seeing a girl at the time i can send up to 40 txt messages a night. its the way of the future. common sense
 
Just bumping this thread to remind people that SMS speak might to fine on mobile phones but it is very annoying to some on forums who aren't familiar with it.

Please try and avoid using it if you can as it does make posts very difficult to decipher for many.

Lets all take pride in our language everybody and spell correctly, as well as, using correct punctuation and grammar.

Mobiles are bad for your health.
