Hello people, I'm doing a bit of research(well I wouldn't call it proper research, just getting a feel for people's attitudes) about online shopping. Hopefully I might be doing my honours for my degree along the lines of this subject(why people do/don't shop online, and what it would take to get people to shop [more] online). Just note, none of your answers will be used anywhere, I'm just a little curious about this subject :)

1. Do you shop online?

2. What products do you shop for? (You don't have to give specifics if you don't want eg. computer parts, movies, music is fine.)

3. Why do you shop for those products online. Is it the price? Easier to shop online than source it at a local shop?

4. What don't you shop for online? (Groceries, clothes, personal products etc.)

5. Last of all, why don't you buy those products online. The online stores are too hard to use? Easier to go down the road to the supermarket? Don't deliver to where you live? Prefer to support locals?

I'll start to get things rolling, hopefully. I think shares, whatever you trade, is a given but feel free to list it.

1.
Yes.

2.
Computer parts, movies, music, software, games.

3.
I find it a lot easier to search for what I want online than go to a shop and look around while trying to find what I'm after. Generally price is a factor as well.

4. & 5.
Grocies: have you seen the web-sites for these shops, Yezzy, they're bad, really bad. Plus they generally don't deliver to where I live. Not that I buy groceries anyway, I'm still living at home, I just pay board :p
Clothes: can't try something on through a web-site. Although I think if there were tailors that took measurements I'd probably buy some clothes if it was easy enough to put the order together.
Cars: obvious one really, I don't think anyone would buy a car without seeing it in person.

1. Yes.

2. Pretty much everything... Books, computer parts, software, even bought some suitcases the other day. Book all my airfares, movies sometimes, CDs, etc.

3. Basically I can do my research and buy it then and there. If I go into a shop, I have to deal with a biased salesman. Usually online shops are just warehouses with a website, so they stock a lot more too, and there is more range.

4. Groceries and clothes are all I can think of. I haven't bought furniture in a while, so I would probably go into a shop for that (after doing research online).

5. Clothes I prefer to try on before buying. For groceries, it's just easier/quicker to go to the supermarket. For vegies and meat I prefer local stores, and they don't deliver.

1. Do you shop online?
Frequently.

2. What products do you shop for? (You don't have to give specifics if you don't want eg. computer parts, movies, music is fine.)
Antique and handcrafted furniture (although I will sometimes check items first), clothes, CD's, HiFi gear like the Transporter, electrical gear, computers, software like AmiBroker and TradeSim. I have bought groceries in the past. Some things I order online but then go and pick them up - like tables or headphones. I know a shop that only accepts online orders. If you walk in the door they point you to a bank of screens to imput your order!

3. Why do you shop for those products online. Is it the price? Easier to shop online than source it at a local shop?
Availability, convenience and price! eBay is a great source for HiFi gear that would cost a small fortune if I could even find it locally. Some things are not easily available in Australia and must be sourced overseas. It's much quicker to check prices online.

4. What don't you shop for online? (Groceries, clothes, personal products etc.)
Food and haircuts. There is not much I would not buy from a reputable source online. The online grocery sites, last time I tried them, were not very good.

5. Last of all, why don't you buy those products online. The online stores are too hard to use? Easier to go down the road to the supermarket? Don't deliver to where you live? Prefer to support locals?
I like to support the locals for food although I have used an online grocer in the past. I walk to the local shops so I also get some exercise while I shop.

1. Yes..

2. Books, DVD's/CD's (ie. Music/Movies) Car Parts, Shares, Computer Hardware and Software, Wine

3. Generally much better prices, even including freight.. for instance the Car Parts (for my little Triumph) are usually 40% cheaper from the UK than from any local supplier.. Very easy to compare prices online also..

4. General hardware, as in paint, nails, buckets etc, 'Normal' clothes, like jeans and T-Shirts.. Special items like 'San Diego Padre' shirts and 'Chicago Cubbies' shirts I do buy online for obvious reasons.. :) Groceries..

5.Generally want to try clothes on prior to buying, and groceries, well I don't like the lucky dip from woolies or coles.. :D

One thing to consider though with any online purchase (particularly in the US) is the sale of 'factory refurbished' items.. These are items that have failed during thier warranty period and a replacement issued to the customer. The failed item is then repaired at the factory and repacked for sale, generally in a generic package, like a clean skin wine.. Ordinarily you are aware of this if you go to the shop (store) like Fry's as they mark them accordingly, however a few unscroupulous 'sites' do not..

Regards,

Buster.

I've been buying cheap wine by the truckload online recently, (Grays Online). Seem to be cancelled export orders & a bunch of unmoved French import lots - some quite drinkable quaffers are going very cheap, and some very cheap wines could be decent drinkers in a year or two.

Did get a shock when I checked my statements though - 4.5 dozen bottles won for roughly $400 in 7 seperate auctions (I think I have a problem!)

1. Do you shop online?
Yes

2. What products do you shop for? (You don't have to give specifics if you don't want eg. computer parts, movies, music is fine.)
Computer parts, dvd's, books, car parts, film (video recorder) related hardware, green slips, insurance etc

3. Why do you shop for those products online. Is it the price? Easier to shop online than source it at a local shop?
Price and availability mainly.

4. What don't you shop for online? (Groceries, clothes, personal products etc.)
Food, clothing.

5. Last of all, why don't you buy those products online. The online stores are too hard to use? Easier to go down the road to the supermarket? Don't deliver to where you live? Prefer to support locals?
Generally with clothing I want to try it first, with food I'd rather buy fresh and make choices at the store.

1. Do you shop online?

Yes

2. What products do you shop for? (You don't have to give specifics if you don't want eg. computer parts, movies, music is fine.)

mainly Books, CDs, DVDs and computer software. Bought bar stools once before on the web.

3. Why do you shop for those products online. Is it the price? Easier to shop online than source it at a local shop?

Price is the main reason and sometimes is availability.

4. What don't you shop for online? (Groceries, clothes, personal products etc.)

Groceries, electrical appliances, cars

5. Last of all, why don't you buy those products online. The online stores are too hard to use? Easier to go down the road to the supermarket? Don't deliver to where you live? Prefer to support locals?

I don't think online grocery shopping is available in WA yet but I have no intention to do it even if there is one in the future. I prefer to pick up the fruit/veg or meat and have a look before I buy. Electrical appliances and cars are something that most people including myself would like to have a test drive before they make the decision.

Wow, thanks for the response everyone. Bit of a shock, didn't expect to see that many online shoppers. Learn something new everyday :)
