It harps back to the days when you could boot into a DOS prompt on a windows pc (a proper command line, unlike the current capability)..most antivirus vendors actually suggested you create a boot disk with a dos based copy of their antivirus program on it, and run it from there, so no operating system files are executed at all, this would then be the cleanest possible scan.

Just google "safe mode anti virus"..there are plenty of entries there on this topic (btw, I work in IT security).

True but you if its unfixable, then you would need to go back into the reg anyway to manually fix it, if you just delete it it could crash it (the file you delete could be a boot log). Same, but for the defence force. Not that it means anything LOL!!!!, as I haven't done that type of fixing for ages so for all I know you could be 100% correct. , I cant even remember 80% of the dos codes LOL!!!

My question was a question of interest only but all of the replies have answered some other things I was thinking about.

I run Nortons, Adaware, and AVG nothing coming up on them at least once a day I scan.

On another computer I don't use much and neglect Avast picked up 4 trojans tonight. Adaware didn't pick up any of them Man was I getting lots of popups telling me my computer was in need of attention.
Tomorrow I am installing Avast on my trading machine just to check it.

You should be fine then, but you wouldn't need to run both AVG and Norton on one machine, as they are both for viruses.

Avast already cleaned it up hence not picked up by adware??, but they perform slightly different functions anyway.

You might also want to try cwshredder and theres another one, I cant remember off the top of my head, will get back to you later on that

Snake, if you like, follow this link and download HIJACK THIS. Run it and get a log file out of it, then post the log here. This program is excellent at getting rid of all dubious software. But be careful as it has no safety buffers built in.

FRUSTRATING KEY LOGGERS

In the world of spyware and adware it is there to catch anyone out, especially with those who share computers. Not everyone cares that much, a message comes up when starting up the computer " Some components of the firewall have not loaded", OBVIOUSLY, restart the computer, but some lazy so and sos don't care. The same applies to the virus protection and messages that spyware has been found on start-up.

It is is worth running two fairly compatible firewalls ( twin firewalls ) to act as a safeguard for the careless.

"Key Loggers" - Very dangerous indeed, as we know, they are able to monitor every key stroke and if this is combined with a phishing website the dangers are only too apparant.

" WHAT TO DO". Well, if you put in a password such as "ASF2547" - the key logger would easily read this and rob you of your cash. INSTEAD, put in the wrong password "BSF2543" and then go back and correct the first and last figures with the correct "A" and "7". The key logger can't see you and will have the password "BSF2543A7" and so the robbing thieving B....... have been thwarted.

Plus we wern't talking about key loggers, I think your talking about pop up's that tell you to download programs (your just stupid if you do) - Not you, I mean anyone.

'phishing website' - your fault for going there in the first place, use cwshredder. (once again not you but anyone)

If you have'nt beeen reading the whole topic no one was actually talking about pop ups, all the programs named you download from a proper site but its free for home use and some are charged for commercial use, i.e. avast

Firewall - They can be turned on manually you dont have to restart, and there is generally one on the router if your sharing connections/computers, plus a separate firewall on the comp. Also as you said some people don't know and don't care, so if the firewall promts them to allow a virus program (they would think oh yeah, its the virus scan thing that should be okay), then click on allow. So how would this stop the key logger if you dont know what your doing, as it has just been allowed.

FYI - all the programs that I and others have noted, all my friends that work in I.T use it. Including head I.T techs for their personal comps. So??????

But yes becareful on what you do and btw there are keyloggers that will capture every password you put in including your 1st second and third etc. Obviously the right security would block them all out as you said.

Theres heaps more info, about keyloggers including how its used by hackers on sites like the bank (whick in those cases only take the first pw) I have read/discussed/talked about it about a year ago on overclockers.com, if your interested have a read of it but I cant find the exact link
