America can appear to be a dystopian movie these days mixing Batman, Spiderman, the Handmaids Tale and Game of Thrones.
It can get confusing.

Thanos, I mean right wing centi-billionaire Elon Musk was about the host the Penguin, I mean Ron De Santis, currently governor of Gilead - I mean Florida - to let the latter announce his candidacy for King of Westeros - I mean president of the US - live on a video feed devised to hijack the broadcast of every TV channel in the world, I mean on Twitter.

But then the illusion burst when it didn't work. Too many minions were let go. (not quite burst)

Anyway this is the guy that some really wealthy and powerful Republicans are backing including Jonah Jameson er I mean Rupert Murdoch though realising Trump would probably win the nomination.

His policies in Florida have been harsh and unnecessarily cruel to gays, trans people, immigrants and pregnant women (he signed into law a ban on abortion after 6 weeks). But it is the ultimate tactical move to get the Maga on side and be the back up man of choice should Trump fall over.

You will notice that, beneath the tough talk, political cruelty and clumsy positioning - here is a guy who won't stand up to Vladamir Putin or Donald Trump, and bases a presidential campaign almost entirely on wishing.

It's not really what you'd expect from the party that was once the party of Ronald Reagan, but that is the state the Republicans have got themselves into these days.

You more a team Trump supporter? ?

The whole lot of them are crazy.
Kissinger is still around! Says he thinks world affairs are becoming similar to before WW1.
China and USA are on what is called the peaking power trap. Historically it has been slowdown that has made ascendant powers become brash and aggressive. You can see this with Biden on Taiwan and Russia. Russia with Ukraine and China with everyone.

DeSantis is captive to the culture wars and has already said that Washington shouldn't retain close diplomatic relations with Australia for our "off the rails" actions. Not good.

I view it as similar.
Too many populists and blind cultists on either side. I honestly think Americans bs is ruining the rest of the world. Not to mention fracturing countries into "mobs" along gender, racial and even sexual preferences.

It's ridiculously stupid.

As I've said, I don't follow U.S politics, but from a distant observation I don't see an improvement on any front since the new Govt there has been in office. :2twocents

The China situation is considerably worse, the Russian situation has escalated, the trade wars have escalated, the military posturing has increased.
Trump IMO has been completely finished by the media, I doubt he will have any chance, he has been cancelled same as Johnson and Morrison, so does this De Santis have much crowd appeal?

Came across this story on De Santis. Absolutely determined to follow fossil fuels off the cliff

DeSantis vetoed $377M in free energy-efficiency money despite extreme Florida heat

Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) just turned down $377 million in free federal energy-efficiency money despite Florida suffering ever-hotter temperatures.

The funding earmarked for Florida came from both the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. It included nearly $174 million for energy-efficiency improvement rebates and $173 million for energy-efficient home appliance purchases for consumers. There was also $7 million for a training program for electrification contractors.

As Bloomberg reported, “The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’s Office of Energy notified the Energy Department last month it was ‘respectfully’ withdrawing applications for the funds after DeSantis issued a line-item veto for a $5 million federal grant for the state to set up programs to distribute the rebates.”

As usual, DeSantis’ team refused to comment.

DeSantis proposed tax credits for gas stoves in February as part of the “liberals are going to take your gas stoves” campaign – despite natural gas being the actual culprit for rising electricity bills for Floridians.
Meanwhile, as WUSF reports, “2023 has already been Miami’s hottest year on record, with the city breaking 15 daily peak temperature records – seven since June 1 alone.” And it’s not just Miami in the Sunshine State.

Electrek’s Take

In case you haven’t heard, DeSantis is running for president. His rejection of free federal funds for Florida is a purely political move. From DeSantis’ corner, to accept would mean implicit approval of President Joe Biden’s clean energy laws.

Since DeSantis is all in on the “Fight Back Against the Woke Agenda” campaign, doing something sensible about energy efficiency would tarnish his self-perceived tough-guy image. He also killed a money-saving EV bill last week for the same reasons.

So his rejection of this money as an attempt to win Republican votes is going to cost Florida residents a lot of money. Florida is getting hotter, and the cost of electricity is going up.

Energy-efficient appliances save people money. Energy-efficiency home improvements save people money and make homes more comfortable. And the crucial benefit of reducing emissions as the result of adopting energy efficiency is a given, though that doesn’t matter to a lot of DeSantis supporters – and it definitely doesn’t matter to DeSantis.
What’s pathetic is that Florida is missing out on these funds for nothing – power-hungry Ron DeSantis is going to lose the presidential election anyway.

Not sure why ppl refuse to believe in renewable energy. My electricity bill went from $250/month to $12/month after getting solar. Yes, I had to pay around 6 years of electricity up front (paid in full for solar without loans), but after year 6, it's just like printing money. I assume lower than 6 years as electricity will cost more, but if its the same, it'll take 6.5 years. I also generate so much energy now that I even let a couple of neighbors charge their EVs (no PTO yet so had to move energy somewhere else once Powerwall is full). It's a no brainer to go solar especially on NEM2.0.

Ron DeSantis May Have Vetoed Florida EV Bill For His Presidential Ambitions

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently killed an EV bill that would have saved Floridians a lot of money. While it was convenient that the move came just after former president Donald Trump gave a speech that railed on both DeSantis and EVs, Trump may not have been the reason for the vetoing of the bill at all. The Orlando Sentinel reports that DeSantis’ puzzling veto may have had more to do with the 2024 Presidential Election.

The bill, SB 284, was sponsored by Sen. Jason Brodeur ( R-Lake Mary). It would have required state agencies and entities like colleges and universities to buy fleet vehicles based on their “lowest lifetime costs” rather than fuel efficiency, as current state laws require. This would have caused these agencies to favor EVs, which have lower lifetime maintenance costs. Entities across the state would have been required to make their purchase recommendations by July 1, 2024. Groups that supported state agencies embracing EVs and alternative fuel vehicles welcomed the bill. But when it crossed DeSantis’ desk, he struck it down, leaving officials scratching their heads.
“It was a common sense, good governance bill. There is nothing in this bill that any person in America should be against,” said former Sen. Jeff Brandes, a Tampa Bay Republican who tried getting similar legislation through last year.
Worse yet is the cost savings that both state agencies and tax payers are missing out on. Alternative energy groups and industry experts say that $277 million over 15 years would have been saved had state agencies and other entities had switched to EV fleets, with savings of “an average of $18,000 per vehicle.” But it could be more to it than just not wanting EVs. DeSantis is hoping to be the 2024 presidential nominee for the Republican Party. And that would require getting on the good side of Iowa voters

This guy is worse than Trump imo. I wouldn't be keen on him becoming president.

One thing about US politics is that the old guard still run the Federal Democratic's Biden is proof of that where as the party that elected Regan is no longer the nut case lunatics have taken over Trump is the proof of that and DeSantis further down the rabbit hole
