Should our political leaders, Howard, Rudd and the like, meet the Dalai Lama on his current trip to Australia and then have to deal with the consequences of what Chinese criticism may try to inflict on us politically, culturally and commercially?
If so, why so, and what is the best way to neutralise the Chinese flak? For example, would it be by maintaining that he needs to be engaged in high level discussions because of his primarily role as an important world religious and cultural leader, rather than his persona as a political leader and advocate for Tibetan independence?
If not, why not?
Any thoughts? regards YN
I think the fact that the chinese government are actually dealing with him to sort out Tibetan problems, and the independence movement have abandoned him as a figurehead, limits the political impact meeting him would actually have.Personally I don't have any interest in the Dalai Lama, but I am uncomfortable with any decision not to meet him by our esteemed leaders purely on the basis of keeping China happy. If such a decision were to be made it would be reminiscent of the kowtowing to GWB.
Anyway, apparently both leaders are intending to meet him so it's all hunky dory.

Has anyone noticed that the Dalai Lama sounds a lot like Yoda? They say very similar things as well...
“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”
