Should our political leaders, Howard, Rudd and the like, meet the Dalai Lama on his current trip to Australia and then have to deal with the consequences of what Chinese criticism may try to inflict on us politically, culturally and commercially?

If so, why so, and what is the best way to neutralise the Chinese flak? For example, would it be by maintaining that he needs to be engaged in high level discussions because of his primarily role as an important world religious and cultural leader, rather than his persona as a political leader and advocate for Tibetan independence?

If not, why not?

Any thoughts? regards YN

Personally I don't have any interest in the Dalai Lama, but I am uncomfortable with any decision not to meet him by our esteemed leaders purely on the basis of keeping China happy. If such a decision were to be made it would be reminiscent of the kowtowing to GWB.

Anyway, apparently both leaders are intending to meet him so it's all hunky dory.

i met him the other day
i was putting up the stage for him, like i do for a lot of artists, or holinesses...
anyway he came down to check everything out a few hours befor his show..
and i couldn't help it but the guy was wearing pink socks...
realy realy pink, bright as the inner sun
i mean what was that about ...

and than the question...
should we meet him...

i would stay away if ou ask me...

Invite him over for an all Aussie beef BBQ , piss up and bug squishing competition or QLD dance of the flaming toads.Problem neutraliseddddddd

pink socks wouldn't bother me...he's a Buddist and i don't think he's interested in sex at all....
it would be fantastic if you could spend sometime with him and hopefully get some wisdom from him; a lot of people would be very interested in listening to his philosophy, his way of looking at the world, his approach to explain hapiness and pain, beforelife and afterlife etc etc
i've been thinking about paying Tibet a visit for a long time...

don't get me wrong hissho
the only thing that was wrong at the time went he walk past me was my
shortsigthness and pink sock judgement
;)

saw him a few yrs bak when he was having this thing in the city, hes very insightful and wise, def a good experience.

I think the fact that the chinese government are actually dealing with him to sort out Tibetan problems, and the independence movement have abandoned him as a figurehead, limits the political impact meeting him would actually have.

Has anyone noticed that the Dalai Lama sounds a lot like Yoda? They say very similar things as well...

“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

Jeddiism (yes it's a religion these days http://www.thejediismway.org/ ) seems to have drawn largely from Buddhism and Taoism so that might explain it.

Another reason Johnny Howard (or Kevin Rudd) might meet with him is to get a Tibetan's thoughts on global warming...

(assuming they are genuinely even remotely interested in the topic of course)

Tibet is melting and turning into desert

Haha... yes i did notice... had me in splits when i first heard him, had no idea he speaks like that. Infact, and i don't mean for this to be taken as rude, but if you shrunk him and coloured him green, he would look a lot like yoda! I wonder if Lucas based yoda on the Dalai Lama...

yeah, its fascinating the messages he preaches... most peace loving religions... Christianity (Christ's version, not the Old Testament version), Buddhism, Jedi..ism all preach... LOVE and FORGIVENESS and THERE IS NOTHING TO BE AFRAID OF... as their primary message.

these are the core elements for anyone wanting to live a happy and fulfilled life.
