Sulphuric Acid is used in many industrial processes eg fertilizer does anyone know of a company listed on the ASX that produces the said product either totally or is as a major part of their production.

Hey mate -

Arafura Resources is producing phosphoric acid. Is that along the lines you are looking at?

I know that it is being produced to be used in fertilizer products.

Cheers

Developing a plant to produce both fuel & sulphur is GLX. In turn this sulphur will be turned into sulphuric acid.

Still a bit of an unknown company, people are finally catching onto GLX, with sulphuric acid prices jumping dramatically. This in turn with their combined coal-to-liquids plant, a no brainer!

Market cap of approx 22mill, up 10% today, moving in leaps.

The "zinc works" in Hobart (owned by Nyrstar) produces heaps of the stuff. A total of six sulphuric acid plants have been built there over the years (the plant dates from 1916), two of which are in current operation.

Production I'm not certain but it's somewhere in the order of 350,000 tonnes per annum of sulphuric acid give or take a bit. Some is used in the fertilizer plant and in the zinc production process, the rest is exported.

The source of sulphur is from the roasting of zinc concentrates - the roasters being literally next to the acid plants. In terms of scale, it's the third largest electrolytic zinc works in the world.

Nyrstar as a business is primarily a zinc / lead smelting company however - sulphuric acid being a by-product.

Thanks all the request relates to a daily wealth article out of USA indicating a possible shortage in the near future.

Shortages of sulphuric acid may become more evident with a number of phosphate ventures pushing into the Gorgina Basin in NT and neighbouring basin in QLD. Phosphate Australia POZ have an IPO current at present, MAK have Wondarah and talk that Joseph Gutnick's Legend International are looking to start up at Lady Annie maybe in conjunction with GCR. All of these will require sulphuric acid to make fertiliser. The nearest that I can gather is Mt Isa (Xstrata) and a lot of their offtake goes to IPL. What if Xstrata cannot produce enough for all?
