Commsuck is overloaded

seems to be ProTrader version 2 is the biggest problem, I have gone back to ProTrader version 1 and it worked like a charm all morning, slowed a few times but able to trade OK all morning.

Comsec is f#$Ked

Is anyone else having no luck with log in on to Commsec???

Flying blind is not a good thing.

Ahhh. It seems they're doing some kind of upgrade tonight. Check out your portfolio's....if theyre anything like mine it shows $0, no closing prices and .... "Position Summary: Margin Call". Least I get a chance to know how it looks/feels before it actually happens ;) fingers crossed they're FIXING their systems ready for tomorrow. Pretty pathetic I reckon, especially since volume wasn't excessively high today (+40% on yesterday). Must have been the number of users online. It was really the signing in that was the issue rather than the trading itself.

Hi Brendan 87
My comsec portfolio shows "0" - I was quite shocked when I checked my holdings. But, as you say, they're probably doing an upgrade tonight. Wouldn't have hurt to put a message out - but nothing! I am seriously considering other internet providers, or possibly a connection with a live stockbroker.

Cheers
Taurisk

Yeah I'm glad I'm not the only one (I was starting to wonder where I keep the little book with all the commsec jargon about the crazy instances when they liquidate your loan). But i suspect they got a wake-up call today and realise they need to stay on top of things more. Other than the lowest customer service of any company i do business with (and failure to carry out basic administration accurately) I haven't had any reliability problems per se...until today. But alas, they did alot of people a favour by locking them out before they panicked and sold off their portfolios this morning and did themselves no favours by stopping the stupid masses from selling their portfolios and lining CBA with more brokerage revenues!

What a shambles today! They seriously need to upgrade their service!!!
Today was a catastrophe ......no excuses
Lets hope the unfolding developments on the Etrade front lead to a more efficient and competitive system

Even Protrader was borked!

Orders placed at 10.00am were not advised as filled until 1pm
Contracts notes for the day still arriving and some not for 8hrs +

Orders took several mins to get through too

No lessons learnt from Sept 12

Using a particular browswer won't have any affect, also firewalls don't apply to external websites (only used for restricting incoming traffic)
Your right... It seems to let people in for limited time... almost as though they kick you out...

Did Pro-Trader have this problem... I;m thinking of getting their services

Slightly off topic I know - but I'm hoping someone can answer a question I have if you have Commsec ML. Can you draw down cash/cheque from your ML say into your linked bank account???

Yes. A phone call to Commsec and they transfer the cash. It's available the next day in your bank account. All that changes is your LVR.

The same for moving money back in. One phone call makes it happen. Very easy and user friendly.

Such is the inherent nature of all things relying on the diversity of demand principle. They fail if everyone tries to use it at once.

Brokers, internet in general, phones, power, transport. They all rely on the notion that not all consumers will have their demand peak at the same time.

I don't have figures except for power. There's roughly 2500 Watts of power generation supporting the grid for each person in the mainland states (a bit more than double that in Tas). All you need to do to massively overload the grid is have everyone turn their oven on during a hot Summer afternoon (or a cold Winter morning in Tas) when business and air-conditioning (heating in Tas) is running flat out and out go the lights (and everything else including the oven).

Same with everything else. Just try having everyone in Sydney ALL drive around the city at the same time. Outright gridlock guaranteed. Or for that matter, just all make a phone call at once and that system also fails.

Solution? Don't count on being able to get through to ANY broker when there is high demand.

A very small broker might cope on the same basis that a small town never has traffic jams - it's easy to have enough capacity when there's basically no demand for it. But other than that, don't rely on getting through at any time during the trading day if there's anything resembling a crash since demand will exceed the ability to cope.

Even stop losses etc could theoretically fail in an outright crash since the ASX itself doesn't have unlimited capacity. Regardless of what they claim, they are relying on the exact same principle as power etc - look at the actual peak demand and plan to be able to cope with some reasonable percentage higher than the peak.

There's no financial incentive for anyone to have more capacity than is actually used on a routine basis, especially not when they either have an effective monopoly (ASX) or make a fortune in the event of an actual shortage (power industry). For that matter, you'd be shocked to learn just how little fuel is kept on hand in bulk storage ever since competition etc came to dominate the petrol retailing business. All it takes is ONE supply problem...

Right or wrong? Give them the (lower) bill and most will say it's right. Give them a decent blackout, broker shutdown and petrol shortage and the same people start screaming about the economy losing $ billions. :2twocents

hmm strange... I was loged on then it stoped working, just like it does when its overloaded. After that it wouldnt let me in for about 15 min.
ahh well :)

My father is with Commsuck and couldn't get in at all this afternoon. He wanted to sell his MZM when they hit 30c, but couldn't thanks to the stuff up. My father has had enough and is now looking for another broker. I changed to ETrade from Comsec late last year. Despite initial hic cups things have not gone too bad thus far.

I'm with commsuck does anyone else have the problem with viewing EXT... It says it's an invalid stock... bullocks
