if only the $$ Millions spent on renewables, had instead gone to cold fusion research..
Long term, and with due respect to their good intentions.. I believe Basilio and fellow travellers on the 'renewables' caravan .. have been on the wrong side of history.
I'll compare it to the person who's chasing the dream of being an A-list actor, a large cap company CEO or who thinks they'll be the next Taylor Swift.
That's essentially what nuclear fusion amounts to. It's the holy grail, it's the dream outcome that eclipses anything else.
The trouble is how long do you wait? At what age do you give up on the dream if you're not getting anywhere with it and instead just get yourself an ordinary job and get on with life as an adult?
Nuclear fusion has been "just around the corner" for decades and thus far that's been the trouble. Akin to the 40 year old still living with their parents, a point comes where you've got to get on with something, anything, that works.
Bearing in mind that a lot of the renewables stuff doesn't have a huge lifespan, it's a few decades at most, so if fusion does come along and make it redundant then it's no big deal. Just build the fusion as the renewables wear out.
The exceptions being hydro and transmission. Some transmission could become redundant, that's a risk, but it'd be a rare circumstance where someone regretted having built hydro. Even if nuclear fusion does come along, hydro will still be useful for load following and peak demand, it won't go to waste or become redundant.
Same with electrification at the point of use. That's needed regardless of the means of generating the electricity.
