Cleaning up Metastock Securities Data

Dear ASF users,

I am trying to clean up the securites data on my Metastock Version11. When I run my Explorer it picks up securites that do not exist today. There are many securities which over the past few years have changed names, gone belly up or have been given temporary codes that are no more. Although my data provider gives me clean current data, these annoying securites are still part of my Metasock data files.

I have been working in the downloader to achieve this. I could manually go through the 6000 or so securities and delete the defunked codes one by one but there must be a better way.

In the downloader there is a patch you can download which is called "Update Symbol Database" which I thought would be the answer to my problem. However after I had done this the unwanted securities from my data set were still their..

If anyone has had this problem and may have overcome this please could you let us know.

Hi Benwex,
While ago I saw similar post and reply mentioned something about extra condition in exploration that all stocks are excluded if did not trade yesterday or few days ago.

Don’t seem to find where it was now, but have a look for it in Equis site, maybe Exploration Primer has it.

Alternatively use specific data like: Top 100, Top 200, or Top 500 if you are after more possibilities to trade.

Maybe this will be good enough method to get around your problem?

Easiest way is to go with Datadirector from Paritech.

You pay slightly more but save many hours.

As a raconteur at the Ross Island Hotel, I charge out at $140 ph, so it saves me heaps.

I have downloaded from the Equis site the latest MetaStock Symbol Utility for the Australian market as I want the the subdirectory of indexes and also I have a few security names missing.

I am trying to merge the new files in the downloader with my existing data files but can only merge on security at a time..

I use Netquote and cant contact them at the moment as they were affected by the Qld floods..
