Hi,

I've been researching cheap chart packages that allow custom indicators & custom screeners and that can access asx EOD data. These packges are free for EOD data or < $50.

The packages that I found so far that meet these requirements are

trademan.com
>> great package - but a bug with screener
vertikalsystems.com
>> looks good but in beta - unsure of cost and data access
prorealtime.com
>> limits to List (50) and Screener output (30) - otherwise great

Any other possibilities ???

Thanks for that - I use FCharts Pro but it does not allow custom indicators and the custom screener is limited - though good for systems and backtesting.

Hard to knock back free EOD data unlimited!

On ASX -- Stocks = 2200 ---- Indices = 25

6 Duration and termination

6.1 Free Service. Your right to use the free Service is granted by PROREALTIME for an unlimited period.

6.2 Paying subscription. The duration of the subscription varies according to the chosen option.

I agree Prorealtime is good but the data options are asx100 or the lot. If you choose the latter your screener output will include a lot of poor quality stocks. You can use a sort option etc. but the output limit is 30. Trademan allows overlay plots (on separate scales) and easy stepping between indcators and stocks to display. If the screener bug can be fixed it would offer a good package. You have to set up a list of stocks and add them to the db , but updates can be quick. The screener programming is a little obscure.

Its a pain but you can set up 8 lists of 50 for the asx400 and 8 screeners - one for each - to give you good coverage in ProRealTime - maybe one day they will have asx500 as an option (not just asx100 or all). It is still ponderous stepping through the stock list produced by the screener. Trademan is better but their screener is a problem. Both offer good systems for custom indicators.

So does FCharts (pro version) have backtesting/and or coding capabilities? Read somewhere on their website something about 'trade-tester', am unsure if this is backtesting capabilities?

Cheers,

Shaun.

FCharts is a system tool that works on formulae for an entry point and exit point. It does not allow you to develop and plot your own indicator (as far as I'm aware). The scanner and back tester is based on these same formulae. What I'm after is a system that allows you to develop your own indicator, plot it on a chart and use it for a screener.

Rusty why not just use amibroker?
It is reasonably cheap and will do everything you want. You can also use free EOD data if you don't want to pay for data.

I'll have a look at it but its expensive, especially as the free EOD data is not corrected - ProRealTime data appears to be error free.

Expensive

its $200 yank dollars!! How is that expensive for one of the only tools you need for this biz!!!

Exactly.

Rusty I'm not sure what to make of you. You talk about creating custom indicators and updating "out of date" indicators but yet are unwilling to fork out $200 usd for one of the best tools that will let you write, backtest and then scan your new indicators.

The cost of amibroker is no more then the cost of 1 bad trade (for me at least) and the profit from 1 good trade pays for it 10 times over. 1 winning trade from your "new' indicators will more than pay for your outlay for one of the best packages going around.

Thanks for your comments - just trying to get advice on what software will meet my requirements with minimum cost. I'll download a trial and check it out.
