Can someone explain what the difference is between Metastock and Ezichart. Does Metastock have a protfolio manager. Also is ambibroker the same sort of thing.

Actually I just took a look in the shop and there is a good article on software comparison but I would still appreciate any comments on disadvatages or advantages of particular software.

Incredible charts and Egoli are both free charting programs "Incredible" has great help files. and egoli has intraday data, Both have their own data supply, most professional packages require Data as an extra

If you play with them for a month or so and get to where you know what you are looking for most of the charting programs have free trial periods, normally a month so with a small amount of knowledge gained from Egoli and Incredible you should not have any trouble getting around them Ami also give a free period but will not save until you pay for the full version and Gannalyst is free if you have your own data. Many traders never go past Incredible

If you see a chart posted on this thread and it has the words "FREE DATA" in the middle of the chart then it is "Incredible charts"

Data is the price information you load into the charting program. For free you can get end-of-day data, but it's typically not adjusted for splits and so on. If you pay for price data, you can get not only end-of-day but also intraday, meaning price bars every minute, hour, or whatever (I've never used intraday data myself though).

All charting programs have different features and capabilities. I use AmiBroker myself, and while it's the only one I've ever used (other than the free FCharts for a short time), I think it has powerful functionality for a great price. Particularly good if you're heavily into charting and have some programming experience.

AmiBroker does have a portfolio manager. It used to be rather limited in its functionality, but I notice that's been phased out and there's now a thing called Account Manager which is supposed to be much better. Never even looked at that though, as I have different software for tracking portfolios.
