you would sound far more intelligent if you could do this without the personal attacks/insults.
 
Its no big deal.

If yogi says it can be done well it must be so.
We have all including myself learnt something.

I hadnt been able to do it so got around it the way described.

Yogi nice to see your keeping up those consistant winning trades in the monthly comp. :) :)

tech ... you really cannot talk about the monthly
comp ... at least we are in there EVERY month,
taking the time to enter, for better or worse ...

... NOBODY gets them right EVERY month, but
at least we are in there having a go ... !~!

Tech .. sorry if my ignorance caused you any heartache

I am very gratefull to you for all the help and examples you have given to new traders over many years ... I have followed you posts with interest here and on Reef, .. I even remember you from the old STOCKCENTRAL site.
I especially have taken on board your advice re buy high and sell higher rather than second quessing and trying to pick bottoms.

If I do succeed in this caper it will be largely to people like you who have given generously over time to begginers.

I bombed out with RTM for a small loss, my second purchase SMY (same trading principle) has taken of and hopefully I can stay on board for a while.

I hope you stay around for a long time


Yogi ... I am still unsure how to create the scenario you suggested :confused:

My SOURCE foulder is E:\Data
File Name is 20070129.txt

DESTINATION is E:\Metastock Data .. and thats it
I tried extending the path to E:\Metastock Data\A-E
BUT all the downloader did was to putt ALL the 5000 odd files into that folder
not just a b c d e but all the way to Z

UNDER OPTIONS if I check the Traverse Destination Folders then the downloader creates 26 individual folders A to Z and puts the appropriate filrs there.

Sorry to be so dumb :(

Well , 1 week down the track and I am having a ball ... how did it all seem so complicated then :)

I have even managed to write a few simple explorations and have (almost) got the formula I want to get the entry points for my trading plan.

Now that I understand 1% of how Metastock works I am looking forward to catching up with the other 99% :)

Anyway back to my problem.. I have visited dozens of Metastock Formula sites .. amazing amount of information out there.
There are a lot of Volume based explorations given BUT not quite what I want.

I have the price range I want on stocks trading on a 2 month HIGH. ColA to D
My ColumnE simply reads V>300000 which is exactly what I wanted but there is just 1 problem.
It lists all that meet the criteria above >300000 which is only on the last day.
Sometimes a stock will have big volume on a price spike while it usually only trades in 10K to 20 K lots daily

What I need is an AVERAGE volume >300000 over the past 20 days.
Is there a more simpler way to write the V exploration ?

There are about 20 stocks which came up (in my price range) so I simply deleted the ones that didn't meet average volume which is no problem if there is no solution.

Going back to what Yogi said.... I have tried over and over to get the result he suggested but cant do it.

For the moment I followed Techs advice which does the job.
Any Metastock experts care to comment if its possible Yogi's way ?

Thanks Seaking ... i tried it and it didn't really work.

All it did was return a value of 1 or 0 ... the zeroes I had already filtered out with my original formula and it still returned all my previous list ... those with a value of 1 all traded more than 300000 on the last day but some were well below 21 day average on 300000 volume

Common you guys your not trying!!

In Column whatever or if columns have more than one formula in it.

AND If (Mov(V,21,S) > 300000,1,0)

Then in FILTER

Column whatever = 1

Sorry, I should have explained that it can either be as Tech/a did above or just tack it onto your buy condition in the filter

AND Mov(V,21,S) > 300000
 
Thank you so much guys, once I put it into "Filter" it worked like a charm.

I'll take a break for a while from posting and concentrate on learning more.

Do yourself a favor and invest a modest $150 and subscribe to Roy Larsens Metastock Tips and Tricks. Its been going 2 yrs so start with the first edition.
Tell Roy Tech sent you and he may do a deal with back issues.
