Brendan Nelson - Toughen Up!

Maybe not slow learners but perhaps need a little more evidence & rigour before changing the economic dynamics of the World. Don't think for one moment that computer simulations programmed by people who think there may be climate change pass for rigour.

The fact that you state the debate is "no longer about whether we are contributing to climate change..." is typical of an approach that eschews intelligent discussion and just accepts a prima facie case. The whole debate has now been hijacked by so many self-serving interests I'm not sure we will ever get the bottom of it. Maybe when someone notices that the World has started to cool again then they'll all bugger off on another "vital" topic!

You make it sound as if the climate change debate just popped up in the last couple of years. It has been going on for such a long time that the overwhelming majority of scientists have accepted the reality of the situation. Opinions differ as to the likely effects, but the notion that human activity does not play a role is no longer taken seriously. Most would agree that the "world is round" discussion doesn't really need a little more discussion, although I'm sure there if you looked hard enough you'd find a differing opinion.

You're right Skint - the warming debate has been going on for years. Ever since the "Oh no the World is cooling" debate ended in the 70's

nothing to do with Brendan Nelson, but I reckon we should have a poll on who believes that man-made global warming is a furphy - and also what we should agree to in Bali in a week or so ......

a) there is no reliable trend that indicates global warming
b) there is global warming but the manmade contribution is a figment of someone's imagination
c) there is global warming, the manmade contribution is unproven, and we should ignore it
d) there is global warming, the manmade contribution is unproven, but we should act to reduce greenhouse gas effects anyway
e) there is global warming, the manmade contribution is proven beyond reasonable doubt, the matter is not urgent
f) ditto but corrective global action is a matter of urgency

Note this is only a draft - and I'm sure it could be improved ...

maybe
g) we should sign up to Kyoto Protocol
h) we should sign up to forthcoming Bali Agreement but only if developing nations like China and India also sign up
i) we should sign up to forthcoming Bali Agreement even if developing nations aren't ready to sign up yet

etc
(Bit difficult to comment on Bali when we don't know the detail yet I know - but we should shoulder our "approximate share of the load" is what is implied...)

PS On second thoughts
I think b and c could be combined to advantage :2twocents

The first part of your poll is analogous to a typical Likert scale survey response form. Likert scales are often employed to investigate graduating levels of agreement to a question. The phrasing and incrementing of the questions are paramount.

I guess it's a case of "Likert or lumpit!" ;)

I have to be honest and say that I thought Brendan was "OK" on Insiders this morning. - give him 2.5 out of 10 lol

At least (in some old footage) he showed some real emotion - even got a bit excited - when someone accused him of being a Liberal ....

"I have NEVER voted Liberal in my LIFE" lol

I hope they keep Brendan Nelson as leader until he reaches retirement age! :D
I'm sure he's a really nice guy, just can't see many people voting for him given past performance as defence minister (?) - JSF, Seasprite, F18E (F111 debacle) to name a few efforts in one portfolio only.
Sheesh, even the Abott and Costello show would stand more of a chance on comic value... :p:
