Is there some member who knows something about bird behaviour?

This evening about 9.30pm I went outside. Usually at this time it is completely quiet, barring the background quiet hum of cicadas.
Tonight there was a frenzy of bird noise, much chattering and occasional screeching, a generally frantic and distressed combination of sounds.

My dog went rigid and her hackles stood up. She became super-alert as she does when she thinks there is some sort of threat.

After a few minutes, the noise gradually subsided and all that could be heard was once again the quiet drumming of the cicadas.

This noise would have come from hundreds of birds.

Just wondering what it might all have been about?

I don't know Julia, but normally my backyard is fairly moderate in its bird noise in the morning (I live in the inner-city) but this morning there were about 20-30 birds up in the trees chirping like mad!

Perhaps they are laying all their plans to fly north for the winter?

Sounds like birds of the human variety to me. ;)
 
Where I live, a significantly raised level of bird noise equates to a goanna crawling up a tree. I always go out for a look because no two goannas seem to have the same markings and as long as they aren't in the chook yard I find them fascinating.

So I would suggest some predator was around.
 
Julia there could`ve been some territory defending going on,
from our back yard we can see this huge eucalyptus and sometimes the noise is deafening, what is often happening is that a group of birds are fighting for position on the tree, well thats what it looks like and while this is happening the other birds are making such a racket that you cant help but be mesmerised by their behaviour.

Hi Visual,

That's probably what it was - it was coming from a huge gum tree in the park next door. It was just so unusual because normally at night all is dead quiet.

I’d rather put it to predator (owl, cat, goana, snake).
If it were sorting out perch pecking order it would start earlier at dusk when birds settle down for the night.

If it started after dark it is more likely that birds were settled down and got disturbed, but not 100% sure.

It's the sound of stupid people letting their cats roam free at night... I hate the cats in my area because they bully my little dog... I always throw stuff at em because I can't sneak up close enough to kick the crap out of them...
 
nah, it was his 'dear oh dear' rising to a cresendo when he thumbed through his portfolio
