Quick question. I imagine that summer is the best time to visit if one was going to visit but wanted to get more specific times. December? Looking for best time of year, little rain etc. Thank you in advance for the information.

Honestly, anytime is a good time.

Australia is such a large country you can have almost whatever temperature you like depending on where you go.

Snow is rare.

Weather is variable.

Temperature in some places can vary a lot in one day. Toowoomba can be 4 degrees in the morning and 30+ during the day. Same for Adelaide. But there are many others like that.

If you go somewhere like Darwin (Northern Territory) you may need to decide if you want to be there during the wet or dry season. But honestly that is most likely the only decision you need to make.

Like I said Australia is a large country, so you could start your travels in the north with 30+ deg temperatures, and finish in the south with 10 deg temps all in a week.

Mate if you visit Queensland, Western Australia or the Northern Territory in December you can be guaranteed

Heat: 35-45 degrees centigrade

Rain: Buckets of it,

Cyclones: 6 on average

Pests: Mossies, godbotherers (xmas, hannukah, eid)

Disease : Dengue, Ross river virus, skin infections, rashes, crotch itch

I would visit in our winter if I were you.

Where is Arizona? I was thinking of going there for a ski ing holiday. When is the snow the best?

Hey Derek,

Oz is a big country like yours.

Our N & NE (Queensland, NT, Northern NSW) is tropical like your SE (Florida etc), Hot and sticky in summer with the chance of the Apocalypse unleashing at any time; but delightful in winter.

Our West & SW is much like your west SoCal, Arizona etc Hot dry summers, mild winters with rain.... but we've got nothing like your NW.

In the middle is... well imagine the Mojave Desert covering the middle 30 of the US.

Our NW is truly unique, but winterish is better IMO. Chance of flash flooding in summer.

And if you visit anywhere near a place called Townsville I believe your in serious danger of being swamped by cantankerous opinionated old b*stards. (though I suspect cold beer is an effective cure for this condition).

Depends on what you want to do, and where you intend to go.

If you give specific details, we can give detailed advice, here, or try the travel forum.

Summer can be the worst time for some activities and places

Hey gg, all that stuff doesn't apply to S.E. Qld. Temp more like average of 30, mostly fine and sunny but some periods of heavy rain, no cyclones in the 16 years I've been here.]
Do agree about the damn mozzies though.

Thank you for the responses. I don't have a specific time in mind but wanted to understand from the locals perspective best times to go as thinking about possible vacations. For bigger trips usually start the planning way in advance. I also would like to do an Ironman Triathlon outside of the US and there is one in Busselton in December and not sure when the one in Sydney is but would be nice to pair up a trip if possible with that event. We'd probably want to visit New Zealand as well since would have already traveled that far.

Like the US, I also understand that various climates exist as we have (Chicago in January is no picnic) while January here can be 80 F.

If someone was coming to Arizona(Phoenix area) I would suggest March or October as we get such great weather. March is also great since about half of the major league baseball teams have spring training out here. Today(and we are middle of summer) was 115 F. Like an oven.

Regarding the question about Skiing in AZ. To be honest although there is a mountain 2 hours north the best places to go would be in Colorado. Telluride is my favorite.

Anyway thx again for the responses and not the normal tourism office answers If anyone has questions about US destinations I would be happy to return the favor.
