Beginning to look into positions

okay i have a year or so on my finance and law degrees and im looking to enter into the wonderful world of finance...

is now i good time to start searching for a job??? all things considering???

would entering one of the big four seem a decent way to get going??? on the flipside i could work my way up being in one of the said big four when 'things' pick up' etc etc

thoughts?

Hi BnF,

As an employer, I would generally look for a new candidate who starts their sentences with a capital.

At the moment I am analysing my business to see where I can cut costs. Right now it’s through efficiencies, but if we breach a certain level of sales then we will be retrenching.

I won’t be hiring new staff for some time I think.

So, work on the capitals, and then I’ll look at your CV for possible employment in 2012.

And, by the way, isn't finance/law going to take four/five years and you have done just one?

I like your vision anyway.

I agree with Kennas.

Learn to write English correctly and learn how to express yourself above and beyond the video game culture.

As an employer, (which I am not) I wouldn't hire someone who butchers the English language, uses more than 1 question mark, and infects others with pathetic expressions.

Judging from your usage you have one year to go. But that could be interpreted as one year done with 3 years to go.

I don't think too harsh and somewhat tongue in cheek.

The intent of my comments are that searching for work in finance next week may be difficult, and in another year (or more) may be more difficult.

Also, if you send me a job application with poor grammar, your papers will go to the bottom of the pile. Obviously.

Of course, I'm assuming that how people write in the cyber world is the same as in 'reality'.

Sorry if this seems unreasonable, just my opinion at this time.

So, finish the law/finance degree, use capitals as appropriate, and in 2011 unemployment may have topped and started to head down again, just in time for you to enter the workforce.

I have one year left of a Finance degree, and I have a lot of contacts within the industry and to tell you the truth, the odds of getting a job for 2010 in the industry are getting worse by the day.

Personally im looking at Masters as an option going forward, as a backup plan if i can't get a job. Even internships are highly competitive, or the firms have cut back on them. I have what i thought was a reasonably impressive resume (scholarships etc) and yet was still not even able to get to the interview stage of over 10 internships i applied for. Although that is not to say you wont do better than i have done so far.

You should try the big four as they have more positions relative to say finance firms atm

Also just take whatever you can get. In the past people were able to choose audit or tax or advisory and then which Line on business e.g. audit - financial services etc etc

If they give you tax and you don't like it, just take it - there are always chances to switch later. Atm getting your foot in the door is the difficult aspect

Yeh, I have heard nothing but extreme difficulty lately in the finance world. Funny everybody said years back it was the place to be!!

Good luck though, there are still jobs out there, just have to keep at it and work out what you want to do. By the sounds of it, you have no clue what role you are actually looking for, but that is natural I guess, until you actually get in there and experience various roles.

I would have thought anytime is a good time to look for a job if you need/want one. Even attempts where you crash and burn(or get no interview) are going to teach you something.

Like, "I didn't want that job anyway", or "plenty more fish in the sea going forward in the fullness of time." ( insert emoticon here)

or "Why isn't my talent recognised ?"

Now, that is a more serious question, which may be answered by the state of your CV, ambition, personal presentation and realistic appraisal of what you have to offer.

Or perhaps you will nail the first job you really want.

With the current finance job environment akin to the US mortgage environment, if you're having lots of trouble getting a full time job, go for a temp position with a major IB. Its a lot easier to get into and looks sparkling good on your resume.
