I might have this wrong, let me check.


I can buy Coke (or other liquid sugars)
I can buy chocolate or lollies (or solid sugars)
I can buy potato/corn chips (solid fat & salt)
I can buy cigarettes (cancer in a stick!)
If I go to the right shop I can buy as much alcohol as I want too.

Not that there is anything wrong with all that, its a free country.

But I can't buy water in a bottle?

And the NSW government ("NSW government" is a byword for "courageous decision takers" in this country, for any offshore readers..................not) have banned bottled water in government departments.

Is this a new standard of idiocy in this country?
 
Bottled water is great. Would I buy it? Hell no. However, most of the youngsters do; and certain brands of bottled water have now been labelled as 'cool'. This pleases me greatly, as it means that many young adults are now choosing a bottle of water, over a bottle of acidic, sugary cola.
 
Where is this going? A ban on bottled water. Great.
From my own perspective, I travel a lot, and in the summer when I want a cold drink, I prefer not to drink the liquid sugar stuff.
In a lot of places, the town water is so heavily laced with chlorine its undrinkable. And I'm not sure how many shops would appreciate people rocking up asking for cold water.
So for me bottled water is great, as I am sure it is for a lot of other people.
I dont get it. What is going on here?
 
yeah, this is sooo stupid

--- because only bottled water uses plastic bottles and transport.. right

I could "understand" a tax to make them carbon neutral -- but to outright BAN it!!!

Yeah I was thinking the same.

Its not to difficult to have a bottle refund like they used to and what they have in Sth Aust.

Put that in the too hard basket.
 
with a 200 -300% mark up i reckon bottled water is just great

especially in a city full of eccy heads

should be more of it i say

perhaps the NSW guvvermint a bit concerned that there employees are replacing the water with vodka just to get themselves through the day

hey !! i bought GENUINE "puffing billy steam " in a can once ....... i was happy with my purchase and one day may open it to relive the memories of that train ride
 
I think that all we need are bottles that can be reused.
Actually I reused bottles from bottled water and only bought new ones when got caught unprepared and did not have my own bottle.

I much preferred to buy water than sugar laden soft drinks.

Maybe soft drinks could be banned too?
 
The thing is, they're only banning it in government departments. Maybe they have filtered chilled water on tap in every government department? They're definitely in most that I've been to lately.

It's actually a brilliant business idea. It also does have a use, as it provides cold water when you're otherwise not able to access it. I wouldn't buy it to use at home, but when I'm out and about it is fine.

I've always thought so. Why not just fill a bottle from the kitchen tap and take with you.

Reminds me of being at Mt Cook in NZ where small cans of 'mountain air' were on sale for some ridiculous price.

I'm also a bit puzzled by this culture of always clutching a bottle of water wherever you go. Generations survived pretty well doing much more physically arduous activity than most of us do these days without needing to gulp water every five minutes.

Obviously we all need sufficient water to keep hydrated and healthy, but it seems to have gone way beyond this into almost a fashion statement.
(I acknowledge I'll be flamed for this sort of heretical statement.)
 

Actually I 100% agree with you Julia

The whole bottled water marketing campaign has been a brillant, but imo a complete crock of $&%! as far as its actual benefits go.

For Christs sake people, just take a drink of tap water for crying out loud. Your beginning to sound like a bunch of pansies prancing around with your precious bottles of chemically-balanced water as soon as the temp creeps over 20deg C.

Actually, spell the brand name of one of the top-selling brands backwards for amusement: "Evian"

Coal burning

Pulp mills

Dams

All polluting or otherwise environmentally damaging and we've heard plenty of objections to them over the years. But all are a lot more useful and actually necessary than bottled water.

I'm not in favour of a ban, but anyone who buys water in single use plastic bottles that have been road freighted couldn't be taken seriously if they objected to any of the above being built or operated. Even more ridiculous if they whinged about CO2 emissions - if we're going to cut them then something's got to go and bottled water would be a pretty obvious non-essential thing that could be cut out. Indeed those who purchase it are consciously paying extra in order to pollute, a rather absurd notion when you think about it.

or should i buy another bottle of jacks instead and wander the earth in a haze?
 

I used to notice this a lot when I lived in the city. It's particularly prevalent among creative types. I guess it's thirsty work thinking up insane marketing ideas like......ummmm, bottled water.
