My first experience of this type of `human interferance` was at very close range.Dad shot a kangaroo which had a joey in the pouch.We tried to raise the joey through bottle feeding and an artificial pouch.The joey got scours and my dad thought it would die eventually so he took us with the joey to the local rubbish dump and as we watched, with the joey standing looking around, shot it through the head.

Doesn't matter a bit that people are dying on hospital waiting lists and their teeth are falling out because they cannot access dental care.

No, IFocus, I don't miss that point at all. I understand that that is what you and others in favour of this great competition believe. I just happen to believe that there are other greater priorities for the money. I cannot see why it is right or fair for a few to have so much money invested in their personal achievements while so many ordinary people suffer so much.

And in terms of 'inspiring a nation', if that were the case why are we the second most obese nation on the planet? Doesn't seem to me that too many are inspired to get their backsides off the couch.

I just happen to believe that there are other greater priorities for the money.

I would put here New Year's fireworks too, nothing compared to 45 billion dollars spent on 2008 Games, but every bit counts.

We could even convert the money into solar or small-scale desalination plants to drought proof more parts of Australia.
