What a distinctly PC debacle the death of the unfortunate baby whale has been in Sydney. Every tree hugging warmer within 500k has been drawn to its last moments, complete with daytime TV.

The unfortunate Veterinary Surgeons and Wildlife authorities have been excoriated by the ecologically infirm when all they wanted to do was save the poor animal further suffering.

I'm sorry about the baby whale.

It would be good if all the people who are so anxious to save a baby whale from its misery could apply the same principle to those human beings who find themselves forced to live out a long and miserable death.

I will never understand why we can show so much apparent mercy to animals but withhold it from people.

Imagine what the Japanese whaling spin doctors will make of this....

As for the "world stops" bit, it's even more ridiculous when you realise the extent to which that happens to play a game or two. Olympics, Melbourne Cup, AFL Grand Final... The cost and disruption is massive. I'm not against any of these, but they're at least as trivial as the whale which is, after all, an endangered species.

Well said, and lets not forget those unfortunates condemned to a long and miserable life, the mentally ill, the poor and the disenfranchised.

These silly people who appear on media crying over natural events, such as whales dying from natural causes really get up my nose.

Me too. If the silly buggers are so keen to charge in and interfere with nature all the time then why don't they take their lawn clippings out bush to feed the kangaroos that starve in every drought.
One characteristic exhibited by most of these people is they're always imploring others to do something for this poor animal but rarely do they come up with any concrete plan about how it can be achieved, or how they personally can be involved.
Like the stupid woman who said it was disgraceful to let that whale die rather than feed it milk and keep it alive. She didn't explain how to find the massive amounts of whale milk or whale milk formulae needed for an animal that size. Nor did she offer her services as part of the round the clock feeding team that would have been required. And she wasn't forthcoming with an offer to go to Antarctica to collect the vast amounts of Krill that were needed for its diet in addition to milk.

It'd do some of these city slicker types the world of good to head out bush in the next drought and spend some time with graziers who have to shoot starving sheep and cattle that are too weak to stand up. Or knock calves on the head that have been torn about and maimed by dingoes. Or put lambing ewes out of their misery after they've had their eyes pecked out by crows.
Just like I've had to do on many occasions.
Maybe then they wouldn't exhibit such immature and emotional stupidity next time they see nature taking its course.

Do you mean legalising youth in Asia?

It`s something to do with size.Big things attract alot of attention while the extinction/endangerment of a native Australian animal due to foxes, feral cats and loss of habitat gets a - who cares.

Media is transparent when you remember their primary goal is ratings, popularity and profitability.Since we all are exposed to media, being pulled around emotionally seems like a normal part of life.

Media, I agree, is to blame.

But so are all these raincoated witches and weirdos who are willing to be interviewed. With their peculiar take on natural process, they captivate a bored audience.

Oh for the days of Monty Python when a gigantic wellie could come a squelching down on their warming skulls.

Not entirely true, what about the billion dollar + mining operations that have been given the kaibash because of some microscopic underground spider was found living there? Apologies the name of the company escapes me but it was in the news 6-8 months ago

Maybe you mean euthanasia?

Yes Julia, you are advocating this for humans are you not?Was the whale distressed?Misery is a human affliction, not a creatures.

Well, for heaven's sake, Wysiwyg, put euthanasia so I know what you are talking about. I was trying to figure the connection between young people in Asia!

Yes, of course I was referring to euthanasia in humans. I cannot for the life of me understand why it's the most admirable course of actions for animals but not for us.

To say that "misery is a human affliction" doesn't make any sense to me.
If the baby whale wasn't miserable, looking for its mother, what the hell was the problem then? And if wasn't miserable starving gradually to death, again where was the problem?

Of course animals can experience misery. And they do. And mostly we human beings have the bloody common sense to put them out that misery.

Well being a tree hugging, save the whale shoot Japanese whalers, left of the Communist party type Wysiwyg is the only one who has made a sensible comment.

Watching a baby search for a feed from its mother I thought would have triggered the maternal instinct of any woman and sadness from anyone with a pulse perfect fodder for the media.

Poor bugger pity there wasn't anything that could be done.

And let nature take its way give me a break show me one area on this planet where nature is not fighting against the impact of humans, just one.

As for humans there are too many screwing the planet up now they are not yet a threaten species more the pity, more whales less humans..........

Now where did I put that rain coat.

Yes, spend millions on the baby whale, and winning a gold medal; it's all in the national interest isn't it?

In the broad scheme of things this is making me feel 'Australian' right now.

My first experience of this type of `human interferance` was at very close range.Dad shot a kangaroo which had a joey in the pouch. We tried to raise the joey through bottle feeding and an artificial pouch. The joey got scours and my dad thought it would die eventually so he took us with the joey to the local rubbish dump and as we watched, with the joey standing looking around, shot it through the head.

Subjective or objective reality?
