No mate, the main league are not national teams, are mainly from a state called Victoria and a few others from NSW, Queensland, South Australia and West Australia.

There are no state teams.

Australian rules is mainly played by bogans from Victoria, or bogans who have moved from Victoria due to famine to more prosperous states.

It is followed by bogans and their girlfriends and mothers, and those hoping to be famous and also by rich people, and media people, and people of interest to the police because of the dodgy nature whereby they became rich.

Thats Australian Rules Football in a nutshell.

There used to be an AFL State of Origin similar to rugby league, but now it happens only every 5 years or so, due to the fact that there are now teams in most states anyway.

Sour grapes?

Opposed to the to the upper class elites who follow Rugby League.

Rugby League is played and followed by hardworking tax paying battlers and law abiding Australians unlike Australian Rules.

This is a fact.

Not correct. AFL is played in every state and territory of Australia. And long before VFL changed it's name to AFL, they were recruiting from all over Australia. From Tasmania to Cape York, Sydney to Carnarvon, AFL is truly a national sport and Rugby League is struggling in it's shadow. Face it, Rugby league is even losing ground to Rugby Union.

Mrs GG no 4 was obviously a Collingwood supporter.

so GG is either attempting to create a stir, or is a complete ignorant.

every person able to read & analyse realises that the game known as rugby league is only in existance in its current form as a 'national sport' thru the constant funding of media moguls. if they were to pull their funding today the NRL would instantly fold and the game die the death it needs to do.

its a garbage game for knuckle dragging folk.

I am feeling quite fragile at present and being counselled by a nice young lady I met last night at a Green Party get together that I was invited to two streets down from garpalmansion.

Nonetheless in spite of holding my breath and meditating for four or five minutes I cannot change my opinion of AFL.

It is a confluence of athleticism, greed, narcissism and crime.

Now I must be back to meditation, and this young lady whose philosophy of life though quite different from mine seems strangely attractive.

Say hello to Natasha Stott Despoja from me please. I am still recovering from the last meeting !

Good point. It makes me smile when I see the folks in Qld say that the Gold Coast AFL side will only be successful because of the $$$ the AFL is throwing at it? Hello - the whole of the NRL owes its existence to subsidies!!!

quite simply AFL is like NFL in US, as both are the national games of each country.

Aussie Rules is the dominant football code in Australia

Sorry Tradesurfer - GG's attempts to fly the Rugby League flag (and here I was thinking it had been stolen...or at least being used to wipe up Nat Myles mess) has somewhat hidden your question.

The 16 Teams in the AFL are the 16 teams in the National Competition. Each State and Territory has its own competition under it.

One of the reasons the AFL has it over Rugby League, Soccer and Rugby Union is the very reason it is often criticised and belittled - the National AFL competition is the pinnacle of the sport. Kids grow up dreaming about being the ruckman for Collingwood, or full forward for Essendon. As such the 250,000 people that attend AFL matches each round are seeing the best playing the best. And the AFL brand it as such. Unlike the NRL that have the best playing the best in 3 times each year.

Mate I only mentioned the game of champions ARL in response to a slur on our code.

Lets keep this thread to AFL.

AFL is a local game played in Victoria , a second rate state with little assets, soon to be overtaken by Queensland as the second most important state in Australia

Victoria is populated by bogans and the wives of ex Majorcan spivs, criminals and nouveaux riches.

The bogans are in awe of the other two and aspire to the same. They make nuts and bolts for the rest of Australia and have none of the former.

So compared to our NFL (national football league), it sounds like the AFL national is the equivilant to our 30 team NFL league. If say each of the 50 us states also had leagues, we would have say the NFL and then the California league if I'm getting the responses correctly.

Since I'm on this forum figured I'd ask the question as you all would know being mostly from Australia. When I went on line, there were quite a bit of teams/clubs listed but as I'm understanding it, those clubs are from each of the states as well.

So who are the NY Yankees of AFL?? or the manchester united for the football(soccer in us) fans?

Brisbane Lions.

Derek

The ones to beat this year are St Kilda.
The long term nemisis of the AFL is currently Geelong but this may soon see a changing of the guard.

A great game which quite a few of my US friends follow.
They love the high flying marks and speed of the game.
The contact isnt that bad either.
