ASX Out of Order

It's been down for three hours so far so my money is on "no". That kind of outage would indicate that it's not an easy fix and they will need to test their systems fully before going back online.

Man, this looks worst than the "Fat Finger" trade when markets were closed for a number of hours :(

I was just thinking, forget about the day- it's a write off, but what about all the brokers etc that don't earn today?
Is compensation available?

Monday's would be one of the biggest earning days.

What about suckers who have bought and need to sell today, margin lendees, day only offset lendees etc.

I imagine a few people are worried in their britches right now....

Right, it's official.
Done for the day.
Line up for 10am tomorrow.
Hopefully....

The ASX says equity markets will not open for the remainder of today.

The underlying cause of the issue has been identified and a resolution path is in place, allowing trading to commence tomorrow at 10am AEDT.

Surely trades completed prior to the outage will remain--I had several complete around 10.20. But I think everything not completed would be purged to start afresh tomorrow morn?
They should remain, but who knows what happen when they rewind the tape or have the monkey retyping orders from the backups
with cloud tech, you are supposed to be able to run systems in parallel with hot switch from one to the other...well, asx seems unaware

So the worry now is making sure the trades from 10 to 10:30 today do not disappear tomorrow morning?

The ASX is an exchange. Once a price asked has been accepted on the bid it is sold.

Similar to paying for your groceries and leaving. However when a supermarket is suddenly locked down because of an eftpos outage, Covid or a bomb scare, those not going through checkout abandon their trolley and leave without buying anything.

Those not having a trade confirmed this am don't have to push their trolley in the heat.

Tailor Made Combinations off till further notice,

Extremely stressful and potentially costly to have this happen so close to options expiry !!

was IB showing an "invalid order" message when you tried to put on an option combo?

if so, looks like it's still down today. got that message when trying to do a roll at close to market value and the MMs are showing spreads on both legs so it's not like there's no liquidity. luckily only minimal impact for me as it's just a small position, but still annoying.

Hi @Sharkman,

Yep I get that message with IB ( placed a test for you ) I'm pretty much squared up with IB, apart from a small position ( a synthetic call backspread )

With my aussie broker I'm having to leg this week, pretty stressful as orders are vetted and painfully slow, stressful but I had a small win with reverse slippage... ( please forgive my made up terms, trying to describe the opposite of when the market moves against me when legging a spread... you folks know what I mean :xyxthumbs )

yeah i know it all too well. you never think to yourself "this is gonna work in my favour" when stuff like this happens as it hardly ever does, but then market throws you a bone every now and then, so it's a nice surprise. just like those odd occasions when you're trying to get a decent fill, the MM doesn't bite even when you go a few ticks their side, so you pull the order off in disgust, only for the underlying to gap in your direction and you get a better price the next day.
